Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy revealed plans today, October 30, to increase the country's missile production.
Minister Conroy said Australia will establish a domestic industry to manufacture long-range guided missiles and other necessary ammunition, according to AFP.
"Why do we need more missiles? Strategic competition between the U.S. and China is a key feature of Australia's security environment. That competition is most intense in our region, the Indo- Pacific ," Conroy emphasized.
Rockets are launched from the U.S. Army's High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) at a firing range in northern Australia during a joint exercise in 2023.
According to Conroy, Australia will also collaborate with the US defense industry giant Lockheed Martin to produce "GMLRS (Ground-Launched Guided Rocket Systems)," making it one of the first GMLRS production facilities outside the United States.
The aforementioned $200 million "advanced weapons manufacturing complex" will produce up to 4,000 missiles per year. "This is equivalent to more than a quarter of current global GMLRS production and more than 10 times the current needs of the Australian Defence Force," Conroy said.
Australia has also signed a contract with French arms manufacturer Thales to domestically produce M795 artillery rounds, a type of round commonly used in howitzer batteries.
"We all hope that the purchase of new weapons and ammunition is unnecessary. But in a world of crisis and turmoil, a well-equipped military is an essential part of defense. In this context, Australia needs credible military capabilities to support its deterrence strategy by countering intrusion," Minister Conroy emphasized.
