Britain has just marked one of the biggest entertainment projects in years as Comcast NBCUniversal, the largest multinational media and entertainment corporation in the US, committed to investing over £5 billion to build its first theme park in Europe.
The project, named Universal United Kingdom Resort, will be located in Bedfordshire, about 90 km north of London, and is expected to become a world-class tourist destination when it opens in 2031.
This investment has received strong support from the British government. According to Reuters, London will spend around £1.3 billion to upgrade transport infrastructure, including roads, railways, and connecting works to ensure accessibility to the resort in the future. This is seen as part of a strategy to boost economic growth through large-scale projects outside the capital.

Universal said the resort will include several themed areas inspired by popular movie franchises. While details of the specifics haven't been announced yet, the corporation currently owns many global entertainment brands such as Jurassic Park and Harry Potter, names that have helped Universal parks in the US and Asia attract tens of millions of visitors each year.
According to the plan, the project will create nearly 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 8,000 permanent jobs when operational. Universal aims to welcome approximately 8.5 million visitors in its first year of operation, a number that could make the theme park one of the most visited in Europe.
At the project launch at Downing Street, UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy described it as “a huge show of confidence” in Britain. She said Universal’s investment decision reflects the enduring appeal of the UK market in the creative, entertainment, and tourism sectors.
Finance Minister Rachel Reeves also attended the event alongside Brian Roberts, Chairman of Comcast. British officials expect the project to have a ripple effect on many other economic sectors, from hotels and restaurants to transport and local services.
In an economy still searching for new growth drivers, large-scale investments like the Universal United Kingdom Resort are seen as a positive sign for the labor market and business confidence.
From the investor's perspective, Brian Roberts stated that Comcast has a long-standing relationship with the UK through Sky and NBCUniversal.
“The corporation aims to create a spectacular destination capable of attracting visitors from all over the world ,” said Brian Roberts. This statement shows that Universal is not simply building an amusement park, but is aiming to create a large-scale tourism hub that can compete with other famous destinations around the world.
The idea for the resort was first announced in April 2025. Prior to that, Comcast had purchased approximately 500 acres of land in Bedfordshire in 2023 and completed the planning process by the end of 2025. The multi-year preparation process demonstrates the group's serious commitment to the European market.
Universal's choice of the UK as the location for its first park in Europe reflects the increasingly fierce competition among countries in the race to attract investment in the entertainment industry.
If its objectives are achieved, this project will contribute to changing the face of tourism in North London and make the UK one of the continent's largest entertainment hubs in the next decade.
