This was also a point raised by many delegates at the workshop "Current Situation and Development Orientation of Arts and Culture in Can Tho in the Coming Time" organized by the Union of Arts and Culture Associations of Can Tho City. Ms. Hua Thi Anh Dao, Permanent Vice President of the Union of Arts and Culture Associations of the city, stated that: With the impact of the market economy , the policy of socialization, the development of information technology and international integration, many new forms of arts and culture have emerged, affecting the current trends in arts and culture. "Preserving and promoting traditional values, while innovating to adapt and develop sustainably, are urgent tasks."
Mr. Truong Van Trong, Deputy Director of the Can Tho City Center for Culture and Arts, informed: The performing arts workforce in Can Tho currently comprises approximately 138 artists and actors, and over 1,000 non-professional collaborators. The city currently has 2 People's Artists, 1 People's Artisan, 12 Meritorious Artists, and 17 Meritorious Artisans. The city has over 400 public and private organizations, teams, groups, and clubs operating in the arts, with thousands of people who have a passion and dedication to the field.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Du, Vice Chairman of the Union of Arts and Culture Associations of the city, the union currently has over 700 members, including 10 affiliated specialized associations: the Writers' Association, the Theatre Association, the Dancers' Association, the Music Association, the Art Photography Association, the Fine Arts Association, the Folk Arts Association, the Architects' Association, the Film and Television Association, and the Arts and Culture Branch of Ethnic Minorities. The members' works are strongly revolutionary and modern in nature. Many works of art and literature reflect life, people, and the new spirit before the nation's resurgence.
In recent times, Can Tho's arts and culture sector has also made breakthroughs through diverse and engaging activities. The promotion of international exchange and cooperation in arts and culture has also been effectively implemented. Can Tho City organizes and coordinates numerous arts and culture activities and Culture Weeks on occasions such as holidays and anniversaries of Vietnam's diplomatic relations with other countries, thereby contributing to promoting the image of Vietnam in general, and the land and people of Can Tho in particular. Especially, many programs and events promoting cultural exchange with countries such as Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Australia, France, India, the Philippines, Hungary, and the United Kingdom have created a positive impact.
To enable Can Tho's culture and arts to integrate
At the workshop, many delegates emphasized the importance of preserving traditional arts and culture and developing contemporary arts and culture in the context of integration. In particular, greater attention should be paid to preserving, conserving, and promoting traditional art forms and tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Can Tho needs to restore and maintain traditional competitions and performances such as the Radio and Television Singing Contest and the Moc Quan - Nguyen Trong Quyen Award. Especially, solutions to strengthen the transformation of arts and culture activities based on the application of information and communication technology, and focusing on the development of electronic libraries, were affirmed as an inevitable trend.
Dr. Tang Tan Loc, Vice President of the Can Tho Folk Arts Association, suggested several directions for the development of Can Tho's folk arts in the context of digital transformation, emphasizing the digitization of folk arts materials such as building digital databases, electronic libraries, or digital cultural maps of typical folk art forms. Simultaneously, he stressed the need to restore and preserve folk art performance spaces in traditional craft villages, floating markets, village communal houses, and historical sites. He also called for encouraging new creative works based on traditional materials, so that folk arts can adapt to contemporary artistic languages, and promoting the integration of folk arts into schools and tourism. Dr. Tang Tan Loc proposed several models such as applying folk storytelling and folk singing techniques, exploring traditional festivals using virtual reality technology, and building an online network of "folk storytellers" and "master craftspeople."
Poet Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Chairman of the Can Tho City Writers' Association, put forward the view that: For Can Tho literature to spread, it must aim for the common good, which is the current aspiration of the Mekong Delta. For Can Tho literature to spread, the writers themselves must first spread it. The works of Can Tho writers should not solely reflect the people and land of Can Tho, but should aim for a broader and more distant life, at least that of the entire Mekong Delta.
***
With a strong foundation built on its rich traditions, Can Tho's arts and culture will steadily integrate, develop, and create positive achievements, contributing to the city and the country's entry into a new era – an era of national progress.
