Coach Kim Sang-sik is streamlining his squad.
The Vietnamese national team has finalized its 26-player squad for the 2024 AFF Cup. Because coach Kim Sang-sik previously had 33 players (30 training in South Korea, plus 3 players from Nam Dinh ), he had to drop 7 players to complete the list.
After a thorough evaluation and selection process, coach Kim Sang-sik decided to part ways with goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, midfielders Nguyen Van Truong, Nguyen Thai Son, Tran Bao Toan, Phan Van Duc, and forwards Nguyen Dinh Bac and Nguyen Quoc Viet.

Of those dropped, the exclusion of Thai Son and Bao Toan was a predictable decision, as neither was given much playing time in the friendly matches in South Korea. Most regrettable was goalkeeper Van Lam's last-minute injury.
Van Duc and Van Truong both missed out on the 2024 AFF Cup. Van Duc was a key player for the Vietnamese national team in the early days under coach Park Hang-seo. However, persistent injuries at his club caused the midfielder born in 1996 to lose his chance to break through. Returning after injury, Van Duc tried hard, but he hasn't been able to regain his previous form and fitness. Van Truong was highly regarded by coach Kim Sang-sik for his tenacity and resilience in midfield, but his lack of experience meant he couldn't pass the rigorous test in South Korea.
The Vietnamese national team welcomes Xuan Son, Van Vi, and Van Toan as they depart for the ASEAN Cup 2024.
On the evening of December 5th, Xuan Son, along with Van Vi and Van Toan, joined the national team; Van Lam was injured.
The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) posted the following information: "Seven players have to say goodbye to the national team, including goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, midfielders Phan Van Duc, Nguyen Van Truong, Tran Bao Toan, Nguyen Thai Son, and forwards Nguyen Dinh Bac and Nguyen Quoc Viet. Among the seven players mentioned above, the most regrettable case is that of Dang Van Lam because the goalkeeper could not recover from his injury in time to secure a position in the Vietnamese national team. The remaining players, except for Phan Van Duc and Tran Bao Toan who are over 23 years old, are all young talents with great potential for development. Being given the opportunity to train with the national team will help them accumulate valuable experience, and through that, gradually strive to become a quality successor generation for the future, starting with the 2026 U.23 Asian Qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games in 2025."
Tonight, three players from Nam Dinh FC, including defender Nguyen Van Vi, striker Nguyen Xuan Son, and Nguyen Van Toan, will join the national team after completing their duties for their club in the AFC Champions League Two 2024/25 group stage.
Tomorrow morning (December 6th), the team will depart for Laos to prepare for their opening match in Group B of the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship against the host nation's team. This match will take place at 8 PM on December 9th at the Laotian National Stadium.
In the forward line, the emergence of Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Van Toan has forced coach Kim Sang-sik to filter out young strikers. Dinh Bac was previously called up to the national team under coach Philippe Troussier and made a strong impression. However, the 20-year-old striker needs to further develop his composure, decision-making ability, and consistency. Dinh Bac is a "rough gem" that needs more time to be polished.

Furthermore, Quoc Viet was also not selected. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his assistants carefully analyzed and evaluated the performance of their players during the 10 days in South Korea. Those who did not meet the standards had to be dropped.
However, for young players like Quoc Viet, Dinh Bac, and Thai Son, there is still plenty of time. They will still be a promising next generation for the Vietnamese national team. It's just that these names aren't quite suitable for the 2024 AFF Cup. The door will open in more promising competitions in 2025, such as the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers or the 33rd SEA Games.
The 'D-Day' has arrived.
With 26 of its best players, the Vietnamese national team is entering the final stage of its preparation. Upon returning to Vietnam, the entire team traveled to Viet Tri Stadium ( Phu Tho province) to familiarize themselves with the pitch and the living and training conditions. Good news for coach Kim Sang-sik is that he now has a full squad, with no one experiencing injuries or fitness issues.
The Vietnamese team will focus on tactical training before heading to Laos to prepare for the crucial match at 8 PM on December 9th.
The Vietnamese team is in Group B with Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos. The goal for coach Kim Sang-sik and his players is to reach the final.
