Previously, in many communes and wards in the province, wedding and funeral customs still persisted, such as holding ceremonies for many days, inviting excessive guests, excessive consumption of alcohol, preparing large feasts, or maintaining cumbersome rituals, causing waste of time and money. However, with socio -economic development and the involvement of all levels and sectors, especially the establishment of model projects, the awareness of officials, Party members, and the people regarding the development of a cultured lifestyle in wedding and funeral practices has improved.
From the model examples
Since 2019, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (CST) has advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue Plan No. 97 on building model sites for implementing civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals, selecting a number of residential areas for pilot implementation.
To ensure the effectiveness of the models and the dissemination of information, the Steering Committee of the "All People Unite to Build a Culturally Rich Life" movement has provided each model residential area with a sound system and a monthly budget of 300,000 VND for propaganda; annually, they organize 2 to 5 training courses on integrating the implementation of civilized customs in wedding ceremonies for the people.
The model of "Residential area implementing civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals" in Hoang Van Thu village, Bac Son commune, is a typical model in the province. From the beginning of 2025 to the present, there have been 3 weddings and 4 funerals in the village, all conducted according to civilized lifestyles; the percentage of households recognized as culturally exemplary families in the village has reached over 98%; and the village has been recognized as a model cultural residential area for 3 consecutive years. It is known that from the pilot model in Hoang Van Thu village, 30 residential areas in Bac Son commune have now adopted this model.
Mr. Luong Van Dung, head of Hoang Van Thu village, Bac Son commune, said: Hoang Van Thu village currently has 136 households with 580 residents. Over the past period, thanks to the close guidance and attention of the Party Committee and the government, the village's Front Committee has closely coordinated with various organizations to promote awareness among the people. Besides integrating the content into regular community meetings, we also disseminate information through the village's public address system and Zalo groups. As a result, 100% of households have been informed about and understand the village's customs and regulations, and 100% of households have voluntarily signed commitments to practice civilized customs in weddings and funerals.
Along with Hoang Van Thu village (Bac Son commune), Keo Van village (Van Lang commune) is one of the units that proactively built and effectively implemented the model of civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals. Ms. Nong Thi Thao, Deputy Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Van Lang commune, said: In early May 2026, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the People's Committee of the commune to launch the model of "residential area implementing civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals" in Keo Van village. Accordingly, representatives of 65 households in the village signed a commitment to implement civilized lifestyles. At the same time, we established the Steering Committee for the model "Residential area implementing civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals" of the commune and the campaign committee for implementing civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals in the villages in the commune.
As one of the 65 pioneering households to sign the commitment, Mr. Loc Van Toan, from Keo Van village, Van Lang commune, shared: "Since the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the commune to launch the pilot model in the village, I wholeheartedly agreed and enthusiastically signed the commitment to implement it. With the village's campaign committee regularly disseminating information and reminding people, the villagers' awareness has changed very quickly. Now, weddings are organized simply and joyfully, while funerals are solemn, thoughtful, and no longer cumbersome or exceeding the prescribed time limits as before."
To spread widely
Building on the success of those initial models, the movement has continuously spread strongly. Currently, the People's Committees of communes and wards throughout the province have maintained and expanded 80 model projects implementing civilized practices in weddings and funerals.
Through the implementation and replication of these models, awareness has been raised and behavior has been transformed among officials, Party members, and the people. As a result, from 2024 to the present, out of more than 5,000 weddings held, over 4,000 were conducted according to civilized customs (reaching 80%); and out of more than 5,500 funerals, 4,500 were conducted according to civilized customs (reaching 81.8%).
Ms. Le Hai Yen, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province, said: "In recent years, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has advised on the development of guiding documents to implement many practical contents aimed at maintaining and expanding models of civilized and economical wedding and funeral ceremonies. In particular, we have taken the lead and coordinated with relevant units to focus on promoting propaganda activities through mass media, local public address systems, visual displays, and organizing in-depth training courses for cultural and social workers, village heads, and influential people in the community."
Accordingly, the People's Committees of communes and wards have issued regulations on implementing civilized lifestyles in weddings and funerals, as well as commitment documents for officials, Party members, association members, union members, clans, and households to implement. Village and neighborhood leaders, in coordination with the heads of the Fatherland Front committees and other organizations, disseminate this information to the people; selecting content appropriate to the actual situation to include in the village and neighborhood charters and regulations.
Simultaneously, various levels and sectors have intensified propaganda and raised public awareness about the purpose and significance of implementing civilized customs in weddings and funerals; criticizing outdated customs, ostentation, formalism, and wastefulness through various diverse methods such as: broadcasting through the public address system in residential areas; organizing meetings with shamans and sorcerers to disseminate information and encourage participation…
Through specific models and practical approaches at the grassroots level, civilized living habits are gradually becoming ingrained, contributing to the building of a united, civilized, and sustainably developing community in the province.
