The beautiful, poetic, and heart-stirring scenery of the terraced fields of Mien Doi (Lac Son) is attracting more and more people. We came to Mien Doi in late June, right at the time of ripe rice, and people were harvesting rice. People said that the weather in the highlands of Mien Doi is quite cool, so people plant late and harvest later than other places.

Many young people come to the highlands of Mien Doi to explore the terraced fields. Perhaps this is the only place in Hoa Binh province that has hillsides with gently sloping terraced fields under the deep blue sky, the green of the old forest, the yellow of ripe rice, and stilt houses at the foot of the distant hills creating a poetic beauty. The elders say that Mien Doi is a fertile land, gently sloping terrain, many places have large slopes, for production people reclaimed land, cleared fields and created terraced fields like today, with a total area of up to hundreds of hectares. In the vast space of green hills, the song echoes: Terraced fields wind around the mountainside / The fire flickers, the flowers dance, I watch the wine of love / We return to the highlands to form a good relationship... Mien Doi terraced fields are beautiful in every season, but perhaps it is easier to fall in love with Mien Doi highlands when coming in June and November - the time of the golden ripe rice season.
Mr. Luu Trong Dat, photojournalist of Vietnam News Agency, shared: The terraced fields of Mien Doi commune are considered to have the most beautiful landscape and field structure in the province and are not inferior to the lands that are already very famous for terraced fields such as Lao Cai, Yen Bai... This is probably the only place in Hoa Binh province that has dreamy hillsides. The fields are naturally layered with terraced fields stretching from the top of the hill to the foot of the hill, creating a majestic look in the vast space of mountains and pristine, peaceful forests.
To get to Mien Doi commune, from the center of Hanoi, follow National Highway 6 to Hoa Binh city, through Cao Phong district to the intersection of Man Duc town (Tan Lac), go straight on National Highway 12B to Nga Ba Xua, turn onto the road to Mien Doi commune. The road to Mien Doi is mainly concrete, the travel is quite easy because the terrain is not too complicated, the places where you can see the terraced fields can be reached by car or motorbike. The beauty of Mien Doi commune's terraced fields is a potential for Lac Son district to develop tourism types associated with the rich cultural identity of the Muong ethnic group.
Mien Doi is a commune in the Cong Hoa region of Lac Son district, 99% of which are Muong ethnic people who still preserve unique indigenous cultural features in their activities and lives. This place has a relatively high terrain, a cool and pleasant climate, friendly and approachable people, suitable for those who like to explore the real life of the Muong people in the highlands. In particular, there are many famous products here, including delicious Egg Khe sticky rice, an OCOP product, wild honey, green-necked duck, chicken, native pigs, wild bamboo shoots, etc. This is a great opportunity for the locality to develop its own tourism products that promote socio-economic development.
In order to create opportunities to improve the lives of people in Mien Doi commune, the province has directed the integration of programs and projects; specific solutions to preserve and exploit natural landscapes and culture, organize the Mien Doi terraced fields festival to promote potential, tourism, attract investment for socio-economic development; implement the Project to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Muong ethnic group; preserve traditional culture, daily life and production of the Muong people. The Provincial Party Committee assigned Lac Son district to coordinate with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Industry and Trade, the Provincial Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Center and related agencies and units to develop a plan to organize the Mien Doi terraced fields festival, Lac Son district in 2024 (expected to be held in late October, early November 2024) with activities to experience indigenous culture and introduce the landscape and beauty of Mien Doi terraced fields; Introducing local products associated with the cuisine of the Muong ethnic group; discovery activities such as paragliding experiences; organizing the Hillside Half Marathon.
