Airlines are simultaneously leasing numerous aircraft, increasing flights and capacity to capitalize on the peak Tet holiday season in 2025. However, many flights are already sold out, including popular routes and business class tickets.

According to the Bureau's statistics. As of January 10th, Vietnamese airlines had added 522 flights during the Lunar New Year holiday, increasing the number of seats on domestic routes by approximately 133,000 compared to the previous week.

Nevertheless, many flights from Ho Chi Minh City to other localities were quickly filled in the days leading up to Tet and vice versa in the period after Tet. Quite a few routes continued to have 100% booking rates.

Shocking prices for Tet holiday flights.

After patiently monitoring the availability of additional tickets, Ms. Bao Chau (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City) finally had to accept paying double the normal price for a one-way ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang , approximately 2.4 million VND.

Similarly, Mr. Thanh Binh (42 years old, Phu Nhuan district) had previously checked the ticket prices for the Ho Chi Minh City - Vinh route, and the total cost of round-trip tickets for his family of four amounted to 25 million VND, so he couldn't buy them yet because he hadn't saved enough money.

However, by the time he had saved enough money and decided to book, the ticket prices had skyrocketed to a whole new level!

According to Mr. Bui Thanh Tu, marketing director of BestPrice, the price airline tickets The Lunar New Year in 2025 is expected to remain at a high level, with an increase of 10-15% compared to the 2024 Lunar New Year.

Airlines such as Vietnam Airlines , Vietjet, and Vietravel Airlines have adjusted ticket prices by millions of dong, double the price compared to the same period last year.

For example, business class tickets on Vietnam Airlines' Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang route cost from 9.4 to 15.9 million VND, while Vietjet and Vietravel Airlines offer tickets from 5.8 to 6 million VND, double the price compared to two weeks ago. Therefore, many people are rushing to buy tickets, not daring to hesitate for fear that tickets will become even harder to obtain.

Our observations on January 14th showed that despite the high ticket prices, tickets were sold out on domestic flights, especially from Ho Chi Minh City to central and northern provinces such as Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, etc.

For example, on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh, Thanh Hoa, and Pleiku from January 23rd to 25th, there are no more economy class tickets available. Significantly, this is a time when many families, especially those who have been away from home for a long time, are finally able to arrange time to return home to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) with their families.

In reality, airlines have increased their fleets, but ticket prices remain quite high. For example, Vietnam Airlines, which wet-leases (including crew) three new Airbus A320 aircraft, will add 75,000 seats, equivalent to 400 flights during the Tet holiday season. Vietjet received four additional aircraft, and Bamboo Airways two.

Flying around in circles isn't any more economical.

Many people considered flying via other Southeast Asian countries before returning to Vietnam, but the cost of connecting flights has also increased sharply, making the roundabout option unfeasible.

For example, if you fly directly from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on January 25th (the 26th day of the 12th lunar month), the ticket price is currently around 3.6 million VND/one-way with all airlines.

If flying the Ho Chi Minh City - Bangkok route on the same day, passengers would have to pay at least 2.4 million VND, not including an additional 1.4 million VND for the Bangkok - Hanoi leg on January 26th, bringing the total ticket price to 3.8 million VND, an increase of 200,000 VND and an extra day lost.

Similarly, if you fly two legs from Ho Chi Minh City - Kuala Lumpur - Hanoi, the total ticket price is 4.3 million VND, significantly higher than a direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Furthermore, connecting flights take more time, require immigration procedures, and can be tiring due to the extended flight time.

While airfare During the Tet holiday, flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and other central provinces see a continuous surge in demand and quickly sell out. However, tourist routes from Hanoi to Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, Da Lat, etc., still have many flights available before and after Tet, with much more affordable ticket prices.

Ms. Huyen from Da Nang found a round-trip ticket from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, departing on January 27th and returning on February 8th, for only 1.9 million VND, much lower than in previous years.

Meanwhile, airfares for international flights to Thailand and South Korea remain high, ranging from 3 to 4.5 million VND per round trip. Ms. Huyen said she will go to Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate Tet with her family and relatives, then travel to the Mekong Delta before returning to Da Nang.

Similarly, airfares for flights from Hanoi to Da Nang and Phu Quoc also show a significant difference. If flying before Tet, passengers only have to pay around 2.8 million VND/round-trip ticket, while during Tet, the price can go up to 4.5 million VND and drop to 4.2 million VND after Tet.

For the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route, the most expensive tickets are during Tet (Lunar New Year) with prices reaching up to 8.4 million VND due to the limited number of flights, while before and after Tet, ticket prices fluctuate around 6 million VND.
