My name is Ly Hong, I'm 28 years old and a programmer at a multinational company. Two months ago, I attended a high school reunion with my classmates after almost 10 years since graduation. I thought the party would be a happy occasion. But because of an unintentional remark, a classmate blocked my account.
According to the plan, the party was to be held at one of the city's most luxurious restaurants that day. I arrived 30 minutes early and was led to a private room that had been reserved beforehand.
In the room, six classmates had arrived. I found a seat next to my best friend from high school, Ma Fei. This was the first time we'd seen each other since graduating. After finishing school, he'd gone abroad to study, and only now had he returned.
I walked towards Ma Fei. He quickly hugged me and warmly asked, "Li Hong, how are you doing lately? By the way, where are you working? Is your income stable?" Ma Fei asked.
I hesitated before saying, "I'm a programmer. My salary is only around 3,000-4,000 (approximately 10-14 million VND)." When he heard me reveal my income, my friend was surprised: "You graduated from university and have been working for about 5-6 years. How can your income be so low?"
At this point, I quickly explained, "Actually, programmer salaries depend on the company's projects. Currently, I'm in a small team and the company isn't very large, so the salary isn't really high. I also hope to join a larger company to improve my income."
Ma Fei raised his eyebrows again and said, "You don't need to hide it. We're so close. Tell me the truth, how much do you earn each month?"
I hesitated before replying, "If I work overtime, I can earn 20,000 RMB/month (approximately 70 million VND)." Upon hearing this salary, Ma Fei's expression changed. My friend and I felt a little embarrassed.
At that moment, the door to the room opened. Other friends gradually came in to join the party. Throughout the meal, everyone chatted and laughed happily. But there was one strange thing: Ma Fei kept avoiding me and didn't want to talk to me.
After the class reunion ended and I returned home, the next morning I opened WeChat to see if my friends were discussing yesterday's meal. I discovered that Ma Fei had blocked me from his friend list. At this point, I started piecing together yesterday's events and gradually understood why he reacted that way.
Apparently, I had worked in Beijing for many years. My monthly salary was usually around 20,000 RMB. However, I didn't want to reveal the real figure, so I said it was only 3,000-4,000 RMB. It wasn't until I revealed the actual amount that Ma Fei thought I wasn't being honest and was deliberately pretending to be poor.
After careful consideration, I realized I needed to preserve this friendship, so I decided to proactively call and explain. During that conversation, I also described my job as high-pressure but providing a comfortable income to support myself and my family. Currently, I am working diligently to save up enough money to buy an apartment in the city soon.
I also confessed to Ma Fei that the lie was simply because I didn't want people to scrutinize or judge me during such gatherings.
After hearing these words, my close friend understood my intentions. However, Ma Fei immediately replied, "I asked about your income not out of curiosity, nor to borrow money. Because of our friendship, I wanted to ask so that if your work is still difficult, I can use our long-standing relationship to help you if needed. However, now that I've heard this, I can be completely reassured about your abilities and current work."
After that conversation, we gradually understood each other better. Ma Fei was still the same. He was always a good friend, caring and always ready to help his friends when needed.
