The craft of weaving woven woven palm mats in Pho Trach, Phong Binh commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien - Hue province has a history of hundreds of years. Now, many people have returned to the craft, making a living from the profession passed down from their ancestors.
In the work "Phu bien tap luc" written by Le Quy Don in 1776, it was written: "Pho Trach commune, Huong Tra district weaves bamboo mats to make mats. Calling them mats is not sad, because those mats are like Quang Lam mats of Kinh Bac region". This is also similar in the book "Lich trieu hien chuong loai chi" compiled by Phan Huy Chu in 10 years (1809 - 1819).
The raw material to make this material is the banyan tree, in the South called the sedge grass, belonging to the sedge family, living mainly in coastal areas or lagoons. The banyan tree that Pho Trach people use originates from the lagoons in Phong Binh, Phong Hoa, Phong Hien communes... of Phong Dien district, growing naturally on the floating vegetation on the lagoons that people call "dò".
