Located more than 20 km from the center of Dien Bien Phu city, Muong Phang commune was an important revolutionary base area, where the Command Headquarters of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign was situated.

It was also here that General Vo Nguyen Giap and the General Staff made many crucial decisions that changed the entire situation, leading to the Dien Bien Phu victory, "renowned throughout the world and shaking the earth."

In the days leading up to the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the Muong Phang base area is always bustling with groups of visitors.

The Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Headquarters was located in the old-growth forest of Muong Phang commune, Dien Bien Phu city.

Here, the headquarters of our Army was "stationed" for 105 days (from January 31, 1954 to May 15, 1954). This was the third and final "station" location until the campaign ended and victory was achieved.

It was here that General Vo Nguyen Giap issued the decisive attack orders and directives that led to the victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.

Located in the heart of the Campaign Command Headquarters was the system of huts where General Vo Nguyen Giap lived and worked.

The General's hut was as simple and unpretentious as any other hut in the old Muong Phang forest. On a bamboo table, every day, the General and the Command staff spread out a map to study the war situation, finding the decisive strategy that led to the victory at Dien Bien Phu.

Through numerous restoration and renovations, the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post site has now been restored with several huts and working bunkers made of more durable materials to recreate the simple and humble life of the Campaign Command in the Muong Phang forest.

In Muong Phang, General Vo Nguyen Giap always holds a very special place in the hearts of every citizen. This land is deeply imbued with the people's affection for the General.

The image of the General remains deeply etched in the hearts of every person in Muong Phang. It also serves as an encouragement for the people of all ethnic groups here to unite and work together to build a more prosperous and comfortable village.

In the home of Mr. Lo Van Anh in Phang 2 village, Muong Phang commune, the photograph of his grandmother, Mrs. Lo Thi Doi, posing with General Vo Nguyen Giap during his last visit to Dien Bien Phu in 2004 is still displayed in the most prominent position in the house.

Mr. Lo Van Anh shared that on the day the General passed away, Mrs. Doi just hugged the photograph and wept uncontrollably. Before she died, she also instructed her children and grandchildren to always remember the General's contributions and to strive tirelessly to build a more prosperous and beautiful village, worthy of the General's efforts and expectations.

In March, 70 years after the Dien Bien Phu Victory, Muong Phang and the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post historical site are bustling with visitors from afar. Among them are former Dien Bien Phu soldiers, veterans, and young people.

When visiting the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post historical site, those who are visiting Dien Bien Phu for the first time or have visited many times before all have their own feelings and emotions.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuong, residing in Hanoi, is the daughter of a martyr who died in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Every year, she travels to Dien Bien Phu to visit the battlefield relics where her father fought and fell for the peace of the nation and for the liberation of the country.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuong emotionally shared: “When my father passed away, I was only 3 years old, so I didn't know what he looked like and don't remember any memories. I only know that he sacrificed his life on the Dien Bien Phu battlefield. I go to Dien Bien Phu almost every year, sometimes 3-4 times a year, hoping to find my father's grave among thousands of unknown martyrs, but I still haven't found it.”

For Mr. Lu Me Li, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, this is also his third time visiting Dien Bien. Each time he comes here, he always makes time to visit the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post historical site.

He felt deeply moved and admired the spirit of the older generations, the soldiers of Dien Bien Phu, especially General Vo Nguyen Giap and Chief of Staff Hoang Van Thai, who were primarily responsible for this campaign.

The simple, rustic camps, nestled in the dense forest, faced extremely difficult material conditions, yet they forged the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people and army. This spirit ultimately led to the victory at Dien Bien Phu.

According to Mr. Lo Van Hoang, head of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post Protection Team, to serve visitors, especially during the peak period leading up to the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the team has also worked overtime, including during lunchtime, and created a clean and beautiful landscape within the historical site's grounds.

The team also strives to do a good job of protecting the forest and preserving the original value of the historical site.

Seventy years have passed, and today Muong Phang is a significant tourist destination for visitors to Dien Bien.

From a revolutionary base area, the villages of Muong Phang are becoming increasingly prosperous and well-developed, resembling a new rural commune.

Muong Phang currently has over 1,200 households with more than 5,600 inhabitants belonging to the Mong, Thai, and Kinh ethnic communities living in over 20 villages and hamlets.

To date, the average per capita income in the commune has reached over 45 million VND/person/year.

Total budget revenue in 2023 is estimated at nearly 11 billion VND, reaching over 99% of the allocated target.

By the end of 2023, Muong Phang commune had only 4 poor households (a decrease of 13 households compared to 2022).

In 2018, the commune successfully completed the National Target Program for building new rural areas.

According to Lo Van Hop, Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Phang commune, following the teachings of General Vo Nguyen Giap, the Party Committee, government, and people of all ethnic groups in Muong Phang commune are constantly striving to build a more prosperous and beautiful homeland, continuously improving the lives of the people, reducing the poverty rate, and making transportation more convenient.

To continue upholding the traditions of the revolutionary base area, in the coming time, the people of the ethnic groups of Muong Phang will continue to strive to develop the economy, eradicate hunger and poverty, and build Muong Phang into an increasingly prosperous and beautiful place, as expected by General Vo Nguyen Giap.
