Mourinho is reportedly just waiting for the official return to Real Madrid. |
After days of rumors, Real Madrid fans still haven't seen "The Special One" return to the Bernabeu. According to Spanish media, the biggest reason lies in the upcoming presidential election at the club.
Florentino Perez faced his first real competition since 2006, when businessman Enrique Riquelme decided to run for the manager. This put all major plans at the Bernabeu on hold, including the appointment of a new manager.
Mourinho is reportedly still confident that Perez will be re-elected. In fact, a two-year contract for the Portuguese manager could become a crucial asset in the Real Madrid president's election campaign.
Not only did Real Madrid face internal political problems, but they also missed the opportunity to activate Mourinho's €7 million release clause at Benfica. This clause expired on May 26th, precisely when the deal was being delayed due to the elections.
This forced Real Madrid to return to the negotiating table with Benfica, amidst strained relations between the two clubs following several recent tense incidents.
Although he hasn't officially taken office yet, Mourinho is said to have already begun planning a squad overhaul.
He wants to sign midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP to upgrade the midfield. Marcus Rashford is also on the list of targets after his loan spell at Barcelona.
In addition, Mourinho also wants to invite Toni Kroos to join the coaching staff as a special assistant.
The Portuguese manager sees this as an "unfinished mission" at Madrid. During his early stint managing Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, Mourinho helped the team achieve a historic 100 points in La Liga, but he was unable to lift the Champions League trophy.
After two consecutive seasons without trophies, Real Madrid believe Mourinho is capable of restoring order in the dressing room and leading the team back to the top.
