In the gentle late-year sunshine, brand-new bicycles were neatly arranged, ready to be given to underprivileged students in Dong Hung commune. This meaningful gift, sponsored by the 9th Military Region Command, aims to further motivate disadvantaged students to continue their journey to school. These bicycles are not just means of transportation, but also represent a spirit of compassion, carrying the hope, motivation, and dreams of these children on their way to school.

Dong Hung commune still has poor and near-poor households, and many families live far from schools, making commuting difficult for their children. Some children walk more than 4-5km to school every day. Understanding these hardships, the 9th Military Region Command, in coordination with the local government and schools, reviewed and selected truly disadvantaged students to donate bicycles as a gesture of compassion.

During the ceremony, joy shone on the faces of the students. Phan Thi Mol, a student in class 2/2 at Van Khanh Dong 2 Primary School, shared emotionally: “My house is almost 4km away from the school. For the past few years, I’ve always walked or hitched rides with friends. Sometimes, when it rained heavily, I had to miss school because the road was flooded. Now that I have a new bicycle, I’m so happy! I promise to be well-behaved and study hard so as not to disappoint the soldiers.”

Truong My Em, a student in class 2/3 at Van Khanh Dong 1 Primary School, was delighted to receive the gift: “In first grade, my mother used to take me to and from school. This year, I'm in second grade, and seeing my friends ride bikes to school, I also wanted a bike, but my parents couldn't afford to buy one. I often borrowed bikes from friends to practice riding. When the teachers informed me that I was on the list to receive a bike, I was both happy and excited to receive it. With a new bike, I no longer have to wake up early to walk to school.”

The heartfelt stories made the ceremony warm and humane. Although the bicycles weren't of great material value, they served as encouragement for underprivileged students, helping them continue their education without the worry of long distances or lack of transportation.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tinh, Principal of Van Khanh Dong 2 Primary School, said: “The school has 6 students from disadvantaged backgrounds who lack transportation to school and have received bicycles from the 9th Military Region Command. This support not only helps them have a safe means of transportation but also encourages them to strive for better academic performance.”

At the ceremony, many parents expressed their joy. Ms. Phan Thi Hanh, mother of Phan Thi Mol, shared: “My family has many children and difficult circumstances, so we couldn't afford to buy a bicycle for my child. Now that she has received a bicycle, I am so happy! With a means of transportation to school, my child will have an easier time and can focus on her studies. I am truly grateful to the soldiers, the local government, and the school for caring about students from poor families like ours.”

Those heartfelt words added meaning and emotion to the ceremony. For students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the bicycle is not only a means of transportation to school but also an invaluable source of encouragement. Many students, after receiving their bikes, eagerly tried riding them for the first time amidst the cheers of their teachers and parents. Although these were just small moments, they represented genuine, simple happiness filled with love for the students.

These bicycles, symbolizing compassion, roll along the rural roads of Dong Hung, carrying the dreams, hopes, and resilience of underprivileged students. It's not just a journey to school, but also a journey of nurturing knowledge.
