Young people are multi-skilled workers.

The trend of working multiple jobs is becoming popular among young people, opening up opportunities to increase income and accumulate skills, but it also creates considerable pressure.

As a communications employee at a company, Ms. Tran Nguyen Chuc Lam, residing in Long Xuyen ward, also chooses to pursue freelance modeling in her free time. Alongside her stable office job, Ms. Lam utilizes weekends to create photo shoots showcasing clothing and promoting restaurants, thereby increasing her income and developing her content creation skills.

According to Ms. Lam, part-time work not only broadens her experience but also enhances her adaptability in the modern work environment. “Modeling provides me with additional income during my free time. My office job earns me around 7 million VND per month, but thanks to modeling, my total income can increase to nearly 15 million VND per month. More importantly, I have the opportunity to experience many different roles, from working with fashion brands to discovering and introducing new dining locations. This not only brings novelty but also helps me hone my communication skills, build my personal image, and better understand the field of media and content creation that I am pursuing,” Ms. Lam shared.

As a Chinese language teacher and guest lecturer at several colleges and universities, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Loc, residing in My Thuan commune, proactively expanded his work into translation and online teaching. In addition to his classroom time, he undertakes document translation and subtitling, and also develops online classes to help learners access the language more flexibly.

Sharing his thoughts on choosing multiple careers, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Loc said: “Combining multiple jobs in the same field helps me both earn extra income and improve my professional skills. Translation gives me the opportunity to access many real-world examples, while online teaching helps me practice how to communicate in a more understandable and relatable way. These experiences complement each other, making me more confident in my teaching and contributing to my long-term career development.”

Beyond simply increasing income or expanding experience, multi-career work offers numerous practical benefits for young people in today's context. Actively trying out various fields helps them accumulate diverse skills, from professional expertise to soft skills such as communication, work management, and adaptability to new environments. Simultaneously, this process helps young people better understand their own abilities and strengths, thereby guiding them towards a more suitable and sustainable career path. In a constantly changing job market, possessing multiple skills and experiences is an advantage that enhances young people's competitiveness and allows them to flexibly seize job opportunities.

While offering many benefits, the trend of multi-career pursuits also carries significant drawbacks. Simultaneously juggling multiple jobs can easily lead to burnout and prolonged stress, impacting health and work efficiency. Furthermore, without clear direction, pursuing multiple fields can result in a scattered approach lacking the necessary depth of expertise. Some young people prioritize jobs that provide immediate income, neglecting long-term sustainable value, thus creating risks in their career development.

Having tried his hand at multiple jobs simultaneously, such as online sales, freelance content writing, and event and wedding organization, Mr. Nguyen Van Tai, residing in Go Quao commune, said he faced considerable pressure pursuing a multi-faceted career. The inefficient time management often led to overload, overlapping tasks, and unsatisfactory results. Mr. Tai stated: “At one point, I had almost no time to rest, frequently staying up late to meet deadlines, which resulted in prolonged insomnia and a noticeable decline in my health. After a while, I was forced to temporarily stop most of my work for about two months to rest and recover. That experience made me realize that doing more isn't always better; you have to prioritize your health and well-being.”

The trend of pursuing multiple careers reflects a shift in the career mindset of young people. No longer confined to a fixed framework, many are proactively expanding their personal development opportunities by participating in various fields. However, for this trend to truly yield positive results, each individual needs clear direction, choosing a job that matches their abilities, while ensuring the connection and complementarity between the fields pursued.
