Van Thanh's surgery lasted nearly two hours. Doctors performed bone reshaping, ligament repair, and treated the damaged meniscus. The recovery time for the player from Hai Duong after surgery is expected to be 6-7 months. This means the CAHN defender could return to the pitch towards the end of the 2025/26 season.
Van Thanh suffered an ankle injury while playing for the Vietnamese national team at the ASEAN Cup 2024. He had to apply ice regularly to reduce pain and play for extended periods. However, this prolonged condition caused Van Thanh's injury to worsen.
Injuries have kept the 1996-born player out of the last two national team training camps. He was also forced to watch from the sidelines during CAHN's recent matches in the National Super Cup, V.League, and the opening match of the Southeast Asian Cup.
Besides the meniscus damage, his ankle ligaments were also affected, not to mention the secondary injuries that accumulated after a long period of playing through the pain. This explains why the 29-year-old defender needed 6-7 months to return, instead of 4-5 months like some other injury cases. Previously, Van Thanh underwent knee surgery in 2018 when he was at the peak of his career.
With his upcoming surgery, Van Thanh is the sixth Vietnamese national team player to leave the field due to surgery in 2025. Prior to Van Thanh, Nguyen Van Toan, Bui Vi Hao, Ho Tan Tai, Nguyen Xuan Son, and Doan Ngoc Tan had all undergone operation. This presents a significant challenge for coach Kim Sang-sik in preparing the squad for the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers.
For CAHN, Van Thanh's absence doesn't significantly affect the team's goals. Coach Polking currently has a deep squad, enough to fill the void left by Van Thanh and compete in four different competitions.
