As reported by Dan Tri newspaper in its investigative series on the case of gymnast Pham Nhu Phuong, who accused her and many other athletes of having to pay 10% of their medal winnings and 50% of their bonuses to the coach, and of receiving wages even when not training on Sundays, as well as speaking out about the "dark areas" in the national gymnastics team, as of February 1st, the Department of Physical Education and Sports has still not issued a preliminary report despite more than two weeks of verification.
Previously, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism instructed the Department of Sports and Physical Education to review and verify the incident reported by Dan Tri newspaper and report back to the Ministry no later than January 25th. However, as of today (February 1st), the Department of Sports and Physical Education has still not been able to report and explain the incident within the deadline set by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

At a press conference on the morning of February 1st, in response to a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper regarding the delay in reporting to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Education, Dang Ha Viet, affirmed that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had issued a written reminder and criticism to the Department of Sports and Physical Education for the delay in reporting on the incident involving the gymnastics team.
"The deadline for reporting to the Department of Sports and Physical Education set by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism was January 25th, but we have not yet been able to submit our explanation and have received reminders and criticisms. We accept the criticism and request a postponement of the report, because this is a very complex matter involving many people and units."
Specifically regarding the national gymnastics team receiving day off pay despite not training, we had to thoroughly review the case over the course of three years to clarify whether athletes trained or not, what purpose the fund served, and we needed to clearly identify the relevant professional department.
The issue of athletes and coaches receiving payment for not training, and the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi still paying them for their days off, is a very serious and dangerous problem due to legal implications. Therefore, we need more time to thoroughly verify and carefully cross-check the records.
"Our specialized departments have been working overtime these past few days, with many people working until 9 pm, but even today we are still not finished because we cannot draw a hasty conclusion on this matter," said Mr. Dang Ha Viet.
Mr. Dang Ha Viet further emphasized: "Regarding this case, if those involved are found to have committed any wrongdoing, we will handle it strictly to ensure a deterrent effect, to make sports cleaner, and to inspire and encourage athletes and coaches to be role models and provide motivation for the development of national sports."
Dan Tri Newspaper will continue to provide updates on this case to our readers!
