On August 22, sources from Tuoi Tre Online reported that striker Rafaelson had submitted an application for Vietnamese citizenship to the relevant authorities.
In his application, the Brazilian player wrote: “After learning about Vietnamese laws and regulations regarding citizenship, I voluntarily submit this application to the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam requesting that I be granted Vietnamese citizenship.”
Purpose of applying for Vietnamese citizenship: I wish to contribute to the Vietnamese national football team.
If granted Vietnamese citizenship, I would like to use the Vietnamese name NGUYỄN XUÂN SON.
If granted Vietnamese citizenship, I pledge my loyalty to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and to fully fulfill all the obligations of a Vietnamese citizen as stipulated in the Constitution and laws of Vietnam.”
In addition, Rafaelson also expressed his desire to retain his Brazilian citizenship to ensure his rights and interests.
Brazilian law currently recognizes citizens with multiple nationalities.
Striker Rafaelson was born in 1997 in Pirapemas, Maranhao, Brazil.
In 2020, he moved to Vietnam to play football for Nam Dinh FC and later had stints playing in Da Nang and Binh Dinh before returning to the Nam Dinh team for the 2023-2024 season.
In the 2023-2024 V-League season, Rafaelson played a major role in helping Nam Dinh FC win the V-League championship. Individually, he won a hat-trick of awards: Best Player, Top Scorer (31 goals/24 matches), and Best Goal in the V-League.
In the 2023 season, he also won the top scorer title with 16 goals while playing for Binh Dinh Club.
Over the past year, Rafaelson has repeatedly expressed his desire to obtain Vietnamese citizenship in order to contribute to the national team.
