The Premier League is worried about losing some stars for reasons other than professional. According to the Irish Sunday Mirror , many WAGs of foreign players find it difficult to adapt to England, from the weather, cuisine to lifestyle. This dissatisfaction can directly affect the players' decision to leave.
To mitigate the risks, some clubs have hired “care teams” to help players’ wives and girlfriends adapt to the new environment. Expert Hugo Scheckter warns that this is a serious problem: “Many players are stable, but their spouses are not. That leads to the desire to leave the club, and for the club, it is a disaster.”
Over the years, a number of WAGs have openly expressed their discomfort with living in England. Most notably Jorgelina Cardoso, wife of Angel Di Maria, described Manchester as “difficult to live in”, with a bleak climate and “horrible” food. Cardoso said she begged her husband not to join United in 2014 and called her time in England a “nightmare”.
Sara Arfaoui, wife of former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, has also complained about Manchester’s cuisine, saying it’s hard to find “fresh and authentic” food. She says many restaurants focus on selling drinks rather than quality. However, after Gundogan moved to Barcelona, Arfaoui admitted she missed Manchester because she had built a close group of friends there.
The integration issue of WAGs is not new, but it is increasingly becoming a factor that directly affects the comings and goings of top players. For the Premier League, this is a worrying sign when the competition for human resources is increasingly fierce.
