The Premier League is concerned about losing some stars for non-football related reasons. According to the Irish Sunday Mirror , many WAGs (wives and girlfriends) of foreign players are finding it difficult to adapt to life in England, from the weather and food to the lifestyle. This dissatisfaction could directly influence players' decisions to leave.
To mitigate the risks, some clubs have hired "care teams" to assist players' wives and girlfriends in adapting to their new environment. Expert Hugo Scheckter warns that this is a serious problem: "Many players are settled, but their partners aren't. This leads to a desire to leave the club, and for the team, that's a disaster."
Over the years, several WAGs have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with living in England. Most notably, Jorgelina Cardoso, wife of Angel Di Maria, described Manchester as a "difficult place to live," with a gloomy climate and "terrible" food. Cardoso revealed that she begged her husband not to join Manchester United in 2014 and called her time in England a "nightmare."
Sara Arfaoui, wife of former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, has also complained about Manchester's cuisine, saying it's difficult to find "fresh and authentic" food. She said many restaurants focus on selling drinks rather than quality. However, after Gundogan moved to Barcelona, Arfaoui admitted she missed Manchester because she had built a close group of friends there.
The issue of WAGs' integration into the team is not new, but it is increasingly becoming a direct factor influencing the future of top players. For the Premier League, this is a worrying sign as the competition for talent in the market intensifies.
