Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, is currently the epicenter of the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, while the rate of spread remains faster than the response capacity despite better-organized healthcare facilities and increased international aid. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Tedros said that five people have recovered from Ebola, with the first case confirmed on May 29.
The WHO head emphasized that early detection and timely access to medical care can make a big difference to a patient's chances of survival. He said that while there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, that does not mean patients cannot recover.
According to the WHO, community involvement plays a crucial role in controlling outbreaks as quickly as possible. Tedros urged every citizen to proactively protect themselves and care for those around them to help prevent the spread of the disease.
