Experts believe Iran is preparing to launch more long-range missiles at Israel and other Middle Eastern countries after rapidly reopening its underground weapons depots. This highlights the limitations of the U.S. bombing strategy.
For weeks, US and Israeli attacks have limited access to Iran's underground missile base by destroying roads and burying tunnel entrances. However, satellite imagery obtained by CNN shows Tehran used simple equipment such as bulldozers and trucks to counter those operations. According to experts, this demonstrates that Iran's missile launch capabilities cannot be destroyed simply by targeting tunnels.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell declined to answer specific questions about CNN's findings. Parnell only reiterated a previous statement that "the U.S. military is the most powerful in the world and has everything it needs to conduct operations at the time and place the president chooses."
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Iran's missile arsenal is the driving force behind the military campaign against Tehran, and that destroying it is one of Washington's primary goals. In a March post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump said that completely undermining Iran's missile launch capabilities, destroying launch platforms and everything related to missiles, was one of the five objectives of the conflict.
Iran's underground missile base system, built over 20 years ago, provides significant protection for its missiles and launch platforms. The depth of these facilities, some buried hundreds of meters beneath rock, limited the attack options of the U.S. and Israeli militaries. Therefore, in the early weeks of the conflict, U.S. and Israeli forces shifted to bombarding the entrances, combined with efforts to locate and destroy the launch platforms, resulting in a significant limitation of Iran's missile firepower.
Experts believe Iran still has around 1,000 missiles stored in underground locations.
