According to Head of Department Phung Tien Dung, the depth of the 4‰ salinity boundary during this period is 30-40 km on the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rivers; 15-20 km on the Cua Tieu and Cua Dai rivers; 22-25 km on the Ham Luong river; 12-17 km on the Co Chien river; 20-27 km on the Hau river; and 25-30 km on the Cai Lon river.
The Mekong Delta has been issued a Level 1 natural disaster risk warning due to saltwater intrusion.
Salinity intrusion deep into rivers and canals will affect the daily lives and production of people in the area. Local authorities need to take advantage of low tides to store freshwater for agriculture and daily life, and at the same time, limit irrigation to minimize production losses.
Besides storing and conserving water, people need to install desalination systems to ensure the best quality water for domestic use and irrigation. Desalination systems are considered a direct solution for utilizing existing saltwater resources. These systems help remove dissolved salts from the water, providing a source of water with a suitable level of sweetness.
In particular, the filtered water can be used for direct drinking or irrigation of plants with low salt tolerance. For aquaculture farmers, it is necessary to monitor the salinity of the farming environment; from there, determine the appropriate start and end times for farming based on the current level of saltwater intrusion.
Previously, from May 21st to 31st, saltwater intrusion in the area showed a rapid decrease. Salinity levels at most stations were lower than the highest salinity levels in May 2025, except for some stations in Tay Ninh which had higher salinity levels. During this period, the depth of the 4‰ salinity boundary on the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rivers was 40-55km; on the Cua Tieu and Cua Dai rivers it was 20-25km; on the Ham Luong river it was 22-27km; on the Co Chien river it was 15-20km; on the Hau river it was 20-30km; and on the Cai Lon river it was 30-35km.
