Under the scorching sun, the construction site of the Hope Bridge 444 (Hao Tam Bridge) in Trung Phu 3 hamlet, Dinh My commune, is bustling with activity. Seeing the young volunteers in their green uniforms, along with the militia and local people, enthusiastically working on reinforcing steel and pouring foundations, one truly appreciates the power of unity.

The 34-meter-long, 4.3-meter-wide reinforced concrete bridge, built at a total cost of approximately 650 million VND, is a transportation project and a symbol of mutual support and compassion. It represents the convergence of generosity from the Hope Fund, Buddhist followers of Khanh Hoa Pagoda and Lien Hoa Pagoda, the Nhu Ngoc volunteer group, and the enthusiastic contributions of the local people. The completed bridge helps alleviate concerns about transporting agricultural products and travel for residents, and provides a safer path to school for students.
Recognizing the crucial role of youth in building new rural areas, the Dinh My Commune Youth Union consistently implements a policy of accompanying and supporting young people through education to build trust and spread influence among them. “We focus on supporting young people in accessing loans for economic development, emphasizing the responsibility of using capital effectively and fostering a spirit of overcoming difficulties. Through technical training courses, the Youth Union inspires innovative thinking and encourages young people to pioneer the application of science, technology, and digital transformation in production. These practical activities not only help young people stabilize their lives but also affirm the pioneering role of youth in jointly fulfilling the criteria for building new rural areas,” shared Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Huyen, Secretary of the Dinh My Commune Youth Union.
Entering the 2026-2030 period, the national target program for building new rural areas sets high requirements, demanding more substantial breakthroughs. At a working session with the delegation from the Office for Coordinating the Construction of New Rural Areas and Sustainable Poverty Reduction in An Giang province, Mr. Huynh Ngoc Danh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dinh My commune, frankly acknowledged: “Although the new criteria have stricter requirements, causing some initial confusion during the self-assessment phase, the locality has proactively reorganized its team to closely follow the reality.”
From the very beginning of the phase, the People's Committee of Dinh My commune has streamlined its management apparatus, issued a decision to establish a steering committee for the 2026-2030 period, and assigned tasks to each member with the right person for the right job. Initial reviews show that the commune has met 2 out of 10 criteria and 22 out of 47 indicators. This is a modest number, but it accurately reflects the stringent requirements of the new set of criteria. "We are not chasing achievements but focusing on substance. Criteria that have not yet been met, such as transportation, schools, or income, have been included in a specific roadmap to address them step by step," Mr. Danh said.
Currently, the commune is focusing on finalizing the draft plan for building new rural areas and sustainable poverty reduction in 2026. A key focus is the effective management and utilization of over 2.6 billion VND in transferred funds to prioritize addressing urgent infrastructure and livelihood issues, ensuring resources are invested in the right "core" areas for development.
Along with roads and bridges, Dinh My is aiming to become a smart rural area. Accordingly, the People's Committee of the commune has signed a cooperation agreement on digital transformation for the period 2025-2030 with VNPT Thoai Son. This is considered a crucial turning point in building e-government and a digital economy in the locality. According to the agreement, VNPT Thoai Son will prioritize the deployment of the most advanced technological solutions such as AI, IoT, and Blockchain to serve comprehensive digital transformation. Mr. Huynh Ngoc Danh further shared that the commune is requesting the province to support investment in an AI-powered camera system for security monitoring throughout the area and to upgrade the community learning center into a digital learning center.
The core objective of digitalization lies not just in numbers, but in better serving the people. Dinh My aims to digitize work processes, helping to resolve administrative procedures quickly and transparently. Technology will be an "extended arm" helping businesses, cooperatives, and farmers access e-commerce and strongly promote local OCOP products to the larger market.
Despite making solid progress, Định Mỹ still faces challenges on its path towards becoming a new-standard rural commune. The need for capital to improve infrastructure criteria such as schools and cultural facilities remains significant. Agricultural production is fragmented, and value chain linkages are not yet truly sustainable in the face of unpredictable market fluctuations. However, with investment in essential projects such as irrigation, electricity, and clean water, and especially with the spirit of unity between the Party and the people, these difficulties are gradually being overcome.
