The price of Hoa Loc mangoes in many provinces of the Mekong Delta has doubled compared to two months ago.
Ms. Oanh, residing in Binh Thanh District (Ho Chi Minh City), said she recently bought Hoa Loc mangoes for the monthly offering, at a price of 160,000 VND per kilogram. "This is the highest price since the beginning of the year and double the price from two months ago," Ms. Oanh said.
Surveys at traditional markets also show that grade 1 Hoa Loc mangoes are sold at 150,000-160,000 VND (2 mangoes per kg), grade 2 at around 110,000 VND, and grade 3 at 60,000-80,000 VND.
Ms. Phuong, the owner of a fruit stall on Hai Ba Trung Street (District 1), said that recently the quantity of Hoa Loc mangoes arriving at her store has been low. All the suppliers have reported very high prices.
"Each day, I can only get 10 kg of goods because the supply to the wholesale market is quite limited," Ms. Phuong said.

Similarly, Ms. Lan Anh, the owner of a fruit stall at Xom Moi Market (Go Vap district), said she only dares to import grade 3 mangoes because grade 1 and 2 mangoes are too expensive. "Each kilogram of Hoa Loc mangoes costs more than imported grapes. Meanwhile, the people in my area are mostly frugal, so purchasing power is weak," Ms. Anh said.
Observations at orchards show that the price of mangoes purchased in bulk (including both large and small fruits) at the farm is currently between 55,000 and 65,000 VND per kilogram. For selected mangoes, the price is 10,000-15,000 VND higher.
According to a report from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap province, the prices of many types of fruit in September fluctuated sharply compared to the previous month, with mangoes being the item that saw a continuous price increase.
Specifically, in September, Cat Chu mangoes at the orchard cost 26,500 VND per kg, an increase of 2,000 VND compared to the previous week; Loa Loc mangoes cost 90,000 VND per kg, an increase of 5,000 VND compared to the previous week; and green-skinned Elephant mangoes cost 27,500 VND per kg, an increase of 8,500 VND compared to the previous week.
According to orchard owners , the reason for the surge in prices of Hoa Loc mangoes is that the crop is out of season, resulting in low yields and consequently higher prices. The Hoa Loc Mango Cooperative in Dong Thap province reports that only a few households still have mangoes for sale. Most of the cooperative members' orchards are producing young fruit, leading to low sales volumes.
Furthermore, this year, the heavy rainfall caused the trees to shed their flowers, resulting in low fruit set and a 30% decrease in yield compared to previous years. While Vietnam's mango exports were favorable during the first eight months of the year, low supply led to soaring prices.
In addition, at this time of year, tropical fruits like lychees, mangosteens, and durians are almost out of season or have already finished, so mangoes face less competition, driving prices even higher.
