Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that the visit of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has created new momentum to bring the strategic partnership between the two countries to a new height.
On the morning of June 4, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received and held talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the occasion of Mr. Albanese's two-day official visit to Vietnam from June 3 to 4. After the official talks, the two leaders held a joint press conference.
New impetus for development of relations between the two countries
"The Australian Prime Minister's visit is of great significance in the year when the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 5th anniversary of strategic partnership; creating new momentum for the Vietnam - Australia strategic partnership to develop to new heights in the coming time," said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
According to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the two leaders had a very successful meeting in the spirit of openness, frankness, sincerity and trust. The two sides comprehensively reviewed all areas of cooperation and were pleased to see that the relationship between the two countries is developing well and effectively.
Political trust, understanding and mutual respect are increasingly strengthened through regular high-level delegation exchanges and contacts between the people of the two countries. Economic and trade cooperation has become a bright spot between the two countries, with two-way trade turnover in 2022 reaching nearly 16 billion USD, an increase of nearly 30% compared to 2021.
Security and defense cooperation is increasingly effective, especially in the fields of UN peacekeeping, combating transnational crimes and cybercrime. Cooperation in education, training, agriculture, tourism, culture, labor, science and technology, and innovation has achieved many positive results.
The two countries also share a common vision for a peaceful, stable, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region, valuing ASEAN's central role.
During the talks, the two sides agreed on directions to promote future cooperation to enhance political trust, contribute to the recovery of each country's socio-economic development, and effectively coordinate in responding to global challenges.
Specifically, the two Prime Ministers agreed that Vietnam and Australia will further enhance political trust through delegation exchanges, high-level contacts at all levels, and the implementation of bilateral cooperation mechanisms, continuing to deepen the content of the strategic partnership towards a new height in the coming time.
The two countries will further promote the substantive results in defense and security cooperation, actively discuss to soon sign a peacekeeping partnership agreement between the two countries; closely cooperate in preventing transnational crimes, cyber crimes and other crimes.
In addition, the two countries will also step up the implementation of the plan to implement the Vietnam - Australia economic cooperation enhancement strategy for the 2021-2025 period, striving to bring the two-way trade turnover to 20 billion USD in the coming time, doubling the current two-way investment level; strengthen connectivity between the two economies, including transport connections, soft connections in finance, banking, e-commerce, and encourage the business communities of the two countries to increase investment in each country. Australia continues to facilitate Vietnamese agricultural products to enter the Australian market to balance trade.
The two leaders also agreed to promote cooperation between educational institutions of the two countries and encourage major Australian universities to develop operations in Vietnam, in order to support Vietnam in training high-quality human resources.
The two countries will also further strengthen cooperation in tourism, cultural exchange, and people-to-people exchanges, and highly agree on exchanges leading to the signing of a cooperation agreement on tourism. Vietnam requests that Australia continue to create conditions for Vietnamese citizens in Australia to successfully integrate, making practical contributions to Australia's economic and social development, and becoming a bridge of friendship in the relationship between the two countries.
The two Prime Ministers agreed that the two countries will expand cooperation in responding to climate change, digital transformation, green transformation, and building and developing a circular economy. Australia will support Vietnam in its energy transition, helping Vietnam achieve its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. The two sides agreed to soon sign a cooperation document in the fields of digital transformation, digital economy, digital society and other digital technologies.
The two countries agreed to continue to coordinate and support each other in multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations, ASEAN and ASEAN-led mechanisms; promote dialogue, build trust, encourage countries to dialogue and cooperate for common goals, ensure ASEAN's central role; strengthen cooperation in the Mekong Sub-region mechanisms in promoting investment and cooperation with ASEAN.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked Australia for identifying Vietnam as a central role in Australia's strategy with ASEAN countries.
During the talks, the two countries reaffirmed the importance of ensuring peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea; and resolving disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of respect for international law. The two sides agreed to continue sharing information and enhancing maritime cooperation.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed: "Building on the achievements of 50 years of good relations, Vietnam is ready to join Australia in a new journey, together bringing the strategic relationship to a new level, more practical and effective for the benefit of the people of the two countries and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world."
There will be new flights between Vietnam and Australia.
At the joint press conference, Prime Minister Albanese thanked Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for the invitation. He said that this was his first visit to Vietnam as the head of the Australian government, in the context that the two sides agreed to further build and develop the Vietnam-Australia strategic partnership on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
"Australia is proud to be one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam," he said, expressing his joy that after 50 years, the relationship between the two countries has developed continuously in many fields.
According to the Australian Prime Minister, over the past 50 years, Vietnam has improved its manufacturing capacity, becoming one of the fastest growing economies in the world. During this process, Australia has cooperated and supported Vietnam in many areas, such as infrastructure construction, clean water projects and education.
"Today, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and I discussed how to deal with challenges, such as in the field of security as well as responding to climate change," he stressed.
Prime Minister Albanese said the two sides will support Vietnam in the field of energy transition, with an amount of 105 million AUD for sustainable development planning, clean energy and mining, as well as support in agriculture.
The two countries today exchanged cooperation documents in areas such as finance, education, science and technology, and trade.
According to the Australian Prime Minister, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre and the State Bank of Vietnam have signed a memorandum of understanding to exchange information related to anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing activities.
In addition, there will be new flights opened from Vietnam to Australia in the near future.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology also signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in science, technology and innovation. The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a Ministerial Dialogue on Trade.
The Australian Prime Minister also emphasized that the community of 300,000 Vietnamese people living, studying and working in Australia plays a very important role in developing Australia's socio-economy and fostering relations between the two countries.
The two countries also agreed to support each other at multilateral forums with the desire to maintain peace and development in the region and the world, ensuring security, prosperity and sustainability.
Mr. Albanese emphasized the importance of educational cooperation and people-to-people exchange between the two countries. The Australian leader said that cooperation opportunities in various fields will help the two countries become friends and leading partners in the future.
