During a press conference held in China, as part of Barca's promotion of their new kit for the 2025-2026 season, young star Lamine Yamal couldn't hide his admiration for Lionel Messi.
Yamal considers Lionel Messi to be "the true role model in the world of football." Yamal said: "For me, Messi is the best player in history."
"I love everything Messi does on the pitch, the way he plays, his movement, his free kicks, everything. It's really amazing for me," Yamal said.
Spanish media described Yamal's statement about Messi as "humble and mature." The 17-year-old star is clearly aware of the immense burden of wearing the number 10 shirt and seems ready to face it.
From the 2025-2026 season, Barca will give the legendary number 10 shirt to Yamal. The number 10 shirt is iconic at Nou Camp, as most players who have worn this number have become club legends.
Johan Cruyff, Luis Suarez (Spanish), Hristo Stoichkov, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Messi are classic number 10s at Barca.
After Messi left Barca, the number 10 shirt went to Ansu Fati. However, the player failed to live up to expectations. Fati was then loaned to Monaco.
Yamal made his debut for Barca wearing the number 41 shirt in the 2022-2023 season. He then wore the number 27 shirt and subsequently switched to number 19 this season.
In the recently concluded season, Yamal played exceptionally well, making a significant contribution to Barca's Spanish league title win. In most matches, Yamal showed glimpses of the potential to become a new Messi. Yamal wearing the number 10 jersey is expected to boost Barca's jersey sales.
