Russia-Ukraine war today, June 21, 2024: FAB-3000 bomb used for the first time in Ukraine Russia-Ukraine war today, June 22, 2024: Russia continues to use FAB-3000 bomb; Ukraine withdraws due to lack of troops |
It is not too difficult to imagine the destructive power of a 3-ton aviation bomb, especially when this bomb has the ability to attack with high precision thanks to the special external wing system. Those are the easily recognizable features of the FAB-3000 glide bomb currently in service with the Russian Army.
The FAB-3000's unique feature is its retractable glider and a combined satellite navigation and laser guidance system called UMPC. In its latest version, the system is also equipped with a jet engine to increase the bomb's range.
The FAB-3000 bomb can destroy solid houses with just one bomb or bunkers located up to 20 meters underground and penetrate 3 meters of reinforced concrete. |
The above equipment system helps turn available conventional bombs into highly accurate weapons with a target deviation of only a few meters. In addition, thanks to the very low production cost, the popularization of this type of weapon is very easy.
The FAB-3000 bomb can be equipped on Su-34 fighter jets or Tu-22M3 supersonic bombers. When dropped at an altitude of 12km, this glider bomb has a range of up to 60km and 150km with the jet engine version. The glider bomb flies at a speed of up to 1,900km/h, making it very difficult to detect and intercept. The advantage of smart bombs is that they can glide from a long distance, accurately attacking the target. This helps Russian aircraft to drop bombs relatively accurately from a distance without having to enter disputed airspace, avoiding the risk of being shot down by Ukrainian air defense.
When attacking a target, the explosive mass of more than 1.4 tons has the destructive power of the bomb to create a crater tens of meters deep, the area of influence is nearly 2km wide. The reality of the Ukrainian battlefield has proven that the FAB-3000 bomb can destroy solid houses with just 1 bomb or tunnels located up to 20 meters underground and penetrate 3 meters of reinforced concrete.
To increase combat effectiveness, glide bombs can be used in combination with cruise missiles and suicide UAVs to overload enemy air defense systems or attack by mistake. The Russian military used FAB-3000 glide bombs for the first time in the Ukrainian battlefield on June 20, when attacking a temporary Ukrainian military base in the village of Liptsi, Kharkov region.
