“Gold Paintings of Enlightenment” – A luminous journey into sacred art

Stepping into the exhibition “Gold Paintings of Enlightenment” by artist Vu Khac Diep, known artistically as Thien Hai, visitors are greeted by a space that feels more like a sanctuary than a gallery.

Currently on display at the Fine Arts Exhibition House at 16 Ngo Quyen Street, Hoan Kiem Ward in Hanoi, the exhibition presents an extraordinary collection of works gilded with pure 9999 gold on metal surfaces, a technique that is both daring and pioneering in contemporary Vietnamese art.

For years, Thien Hai has devoted himself to researching and refining this demanding craft. Gold, under his persistent labor, ceases to be a precious material alone and transforms into a philosophical medium. Light becomes the brushstroke; gold becomes the breath of the image. Each painting carries the quiet shimmer of illumination, inviting the viewer not only to observe but to contemplate.

Shimmering with 9999 gold, the painting radiates an extraordinary vibrancy.

The exhibition title encapsulates this dual essence: “Gold Painting” speaks to the artist’s mastery of a new technique where gold is identity, language and spiritual weight. Meanwhile “Enlightenment” suggests the inner state provoked by these radiant surfaces: expansion of awareness, tranquil presence, and a subtle awakening of inner vitality.

Centered on the image of Buddha Shakyamuni, the works open onto diverse emotional realms. Some radiate serenity and sacred stillness; others pulse with strength, joy, or auspicious energy. From the soft reflection of gold catching afternoon light to the powerful symbolism embedded in each gesture and expression, the exhibition offers viewers a rare blend of craftsmanship and contemplation.

Using gold as his medium, the artist, born in 1981, seeks to convey and share the enduring spirit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, affirming the timeless presence of these values in human life.

“For me, gold is more than a precious material. It embodies life energy, radiates light, and carries the essence of purity,” he explained.

The exhibition will run until December 20 in Hanoi.
