Hanoi residents will soon have the chance to observe a wide range of snake species up close at the Snake Breeding and Conservation Center in Le Mat, the capital’s traditional snake-raising craft village in Viet Hung Ward.
Le Mat, a centuries-old village in Viet Hung Ward, has long been known as the cradle of traditional snake farming, located about seven kilometers northeast of central Hanoi. To preserve this unique cultural heritage and boost local tourism, the Le Mat Craft Village Cooperative is developing a Snake Conservation and Breeding Center along with a Creative Design and OCOP Exhibition Center.
The complex, covering more than 7,400 square meters, will showcase village craft products and support Le Mat’s long-standing snake-farming tourism model. With an initial investment of over VND10 billion (US$379,314), the first phase of the project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026. Its standout feature is a sinuous, snake-inspired architectural design that reflects the village’s centuries-old tradition.
The center includes interconnected functional zones such as a history and culture exhibition area, a conservation zone for snakes and rare reptiles, an interactive performance and education space, an OCOP display and culinary zone featuring snake-based specialties, as well as eco-lodging, green spaces and supporting tourism services.
It is a multi-purpose model that preserves cultural heritage, boosts the local economy, and promotes sustainable tourism. With its distinct traditions and environment, Le Mat has strong potential to become a standout destination on Hanoi’s eco-cultural tourism map.
