Tourists spend between nearly $1,000 and $2,000 a day at the world's most expensive resorts, notably the Caribbean island of Saint-Barthélemy.
The Florida Panhandle travel advisory released a report this month on average visitor spending at 100 of the world’s most popular vacation destinations. The ratings are based on spending on accommodations, transportation, food and attractions, not including airfare.
Topping the list of the world’s 10 most expensive holiday destinations is the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy. Visitors pay an average of $1,770 per night to stay there. The average person spends $1,852 per day.
In second place is the resort town of Gstaad, Switzerland. The average hotel room costs $1,360 per night. Food costs in Gstaad are the highest on the list, at $177 per person per day. The total cost of living is about $1,554 per day.
The third most expensive destination is Aspen, Colorado, USA. Each tourist has to spend 1,385 USD for a day of travel here. Meanwhile, the average spending of a family of 4 in a day is 2,274 USD.
According to the report, the ski town of Park City, Utah, USA, spends the most on sightseeing and exploring activities, with visitors spending an average of $333 on attractions. The town is ranked fourth on the list of the world's most expensive resorts, with a cost of $1,257 per person per day.
The list of 10 most expensive vacation destinations also includes Maui, Hawaii, ranked 5th, with a travel cost of 1,082 USD per day. London, England ranked 6th, with an average daily spend of 1,008 USD. Cocoa Island, Maldives ranked 7th with a cost of 981 USD per day.
Activities and experiences in Maun, Botswana, the only African destination on the list, cost an average of more than $100 per day. This destination ranked 8th on the list, with visitors spending an average of $949 per day.
The resort paradise of Monte Carlo, France, ranked 10th with each visitor spending an average of $809 a day. The Florida Panhandle said this was a surprising result given Monte Carlo's reputation for its many vibrant casinos.
Despite their high total costs, the attractions in Saint-Barthélemy (or St. Barts in English) and the Maldives are priced at $0. Vacationers here often have to pay a lot for hotel and resort stays, while beach activities in these two locations are almost free.
