2 cases of “flesh-eating bacteria” infection in Dak Lak are about to be discharged from hospital

On July 10, information from the Dak Lak Department of Health said that the province had just recorded 2 patients with Whitmore disease - commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria infection. These are also the first 2 cases detected in Dak Lak province in 2025.

The first case is patient BIC (male, born in 1970, residing in Hiep Doan village, Ea M'Droh commune, Dak Lak province). According to the patient's family, on June 11, at home, the patient had symptoms of continuous high fever, difficulty breathing, and cough with phlegm. From June 18 to June 23, the patient went to Buon Don Medical Center for examination and treatment with a diagnosis of acute respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, type 2 diabetes, acute kidney injury, hip arthritis (T), angina, and hyperlipidemia. On June 23, the patient was hospitalized for treatment at the Central Highlands General Hospital with a diagnosis of severe pneumonia, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. On July 2, the patient had a positive microbiological test result for Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria.

The second case is patient DLM (Male, born in 1960, residing in Quang Dong village, Hoa Son commune, Dak Lak province). On June 14, while at home, the patient had symptoms of fever and painful urination. On June 24, the patient went to the clinic and was admitted to the Central Highlands General Hospital with a diagnosis of urinary retention due to prostate enlargement and high blood pressure. On June 30, the patient had a positive microbiological test result for the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Doctor H'Nuen Hđơk, Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Central Highlands General Hospital, said that after receiving 2 patients with Whitmore's disease, the hospital treated the patients according to the Ministry of Health 's protocol. Currently, the health of the 2 patients has gradually stabilized. It is expected that in the next 5 days, the 2 patients will be discharged from the hospital.

Whitmore disease is an infectious disease in humans and animals caused by the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei. The bacteria live in soil and contaminated water and enter the human body mainly through wounds in the skin and mucous membranes. The disease is common in Southeast Asian countries.
