3 ways to clean your air conditioner yourself without calling a technician.

Cleaning your air conditioner yourself optimizes its cooling performance while saving on the cost of hiring a technician; try these three effective air conditioner cleaning methods.

During operation, air conditioners function as a recirculating air system, continuously moving air around the room and inadvertently trapping dust and dirt on their surfaces. After a period of use, a thick layer of dust and dirt will clog the filters and heat exchangers. This leads to reduced cooling efficiency, increased energy consumption, and creates an environment for bacteria and mold to grow, affecting respiratory health.

Many families tend to call air conditioner maintenance technicians as soon as their unit starts cooling poorly. However, during peak hot weather periods, waiting for a technician often takes a long time and service costs increase. In reality, you can proactively control and clean your equipment yourself through three at-home cleaning methods, ranging from simple to advanced, without requiring overly complex techniques.

Clean the coarse dust filter and the front panel of the indoor unit.

This is the simplest air conditioner cleaning method that anyone can do themselves. You should maintain a frequency of once every 2 to 4 weeks throughout the summer to ensure a stable airflow. The coarse dust filter is the first line of defense preventing dust and dirt from the room from penetrating deep into the cooling system.

Steps to follow:

Disconnect the power supply: First, turn off the air conditioner and disconnect the power supply (circuit breaker or plug) to ensure safety.

  • Clean the exterior and lift the front panel cover: Use a damp cloth to wipe the outer plastic casing clean. Then, using both hands, gently lift the front panel cover of the indoor unit upwards along the opening mechanism.
  • Removing the filter: Gently push the filter upwards and then slide it downwards to remove the two dust filter screens.
  • Cleaning the filter: Rinse the filter under running water. You can use a soft brush and some diluted soap to remove any buildup. Note that you should not wash it with water that is too hot, as high temperatures can easily deform the plastic mesh.
  • Drying and reassembly: Dry the filter mesh in a shaded, well-ventilated area naturally, then reassemble it into the machine.

Deep clean the evaporator coil using a spray nozzle and a water collection bag.

After about 3 to 6 months of use, tiny dust particles will pass through the coarse filter and stick to the aluminum heat sink fins and squirrel cage fan inside. At this point, you need to perform a deeper cleaning using a water spray.

To do this, prepare a specialized water collection bag (air conditioner cleaning cover), a handheld pressure sprayer, and a few dry towels.

Steps to follow:

  • Isolate the electronic circuit board: Use a plastic bag or food wrap to completely cover the electronic circuit board area on the right side of the indoor unit. This is a crucial step to prevent water from entering and damaging the circuit.
  • Installing the water collection bag: Hang the air conditioner cleaning cover snugly around the indoor unit, and thread the dirty water drain pipe into a bucket placed on the floor.
  • Cooling system cleaning spray: Use a spray bottle to directly spray clean water or a specialized cleaning solution onto the aluminum fins of the radiator, from top to bottom. Hold the spray nozzle at a right angle and maintain a safe distance to avoid denting the thin fins.
  • Cleaning squirrel cage fan blades: Spray water deep into the fan blade crevices to wash away accumulated dirt and dust.
  • Dry thoroughly: Use a dry cloth to wipe away any water droplets on the casing, remove the drip bag, and wait until the machine is completely dry before restarting.

Spray and clean the outdoor condenser unit.

The outdoor unit is where the entire air conditioning system dissipates heat. If the outdoor unit is covered in too much dust and dirt, the compressor will overheat and frequently shut off to protect itself, resulting in the air conditioner not being able to cool effectively. The outdoor unit should be cleaned every six months.

Steps to follow:

  • Free up space: Remove any obstructions, leaves, and cobwebs around the outdoor unit to allow for better circulation of hot air.
  • Spray cleaning of the heat sink fins: Use a moderate-pressure water spray to directly rinse the heat sink fins on the back and sides of the outdoor unit.
  • Cleaning the fan blades: You can use a damp cloth to wipe the front of the fan blades clean. When spraying water, avoid spraying directly onto the electrical junction box or the fan motor to minimize the risk of short circuits.
  • Drainage holes: Check the drainage holes at the bottom of the machine for blockages caused by mud and dirt, and clear them promptly.

Safety principles when cleaning air conditioners.

Self-maintenance of air conditioners helps homeowners save money and be more proactive in their daily lives. However, to ensure the equipment operates reliably, you need to follow some technical safety principles:

  • Completely disconnect the power: This is a mandatory rule before performing any cleaning operations.
  • Avoid contact with the circuit board: The electronic circuit board is the most sensitive and expensive component of the air conditioner. Make sure this part is properly protected.
  • Control the spray pressure: Using a spray nozzle with excessive pressure or spraying at the wrong angle can deform the aluminum heat sink fins, inadvertently reducing the machine's heat exchange efficiency.
  • Recognize the limitations: Home maintenance only goes as far as cleaning surface dirt and dust. If your air conditioner experiences more complex technical issues such as gas leaks, capacitor failures, strange noises from the compressor, or circuit board errors, contacting professional maintenance centers is the sensible decision to ensure the safety of both the equipment and your family.
