The American Graduate Medical Education Program (ACGME-I) is one of the most prestigious and rigorous accreditations for residency training worldwide.

As a university with a strong desire for innovation and excellence in education, from its early days VinUni has strategically partnered with one of the world's leading medical schools, the University of Pennsylvania, to design and implement programs based on the principles of ACGME-I accreditation.

VinUni's residency program meets ACGME-I standards, with the most stringent accreditation requirements.

The ACGME-I residency program is a competency-based clinical training program with specific competency milestones that resident physicians need to achieve in order to work independently upon graduation.

Resident physicians will undergo a comprehensive assessment of their clinical competence in the workplace through examinations and treatment of patients at the practice hospital according to established timelines.

The system assesses not only clinical medical knowledge, but also the ability to treat patients, perform procedures, communicate, work in teams, practice based on the system, and learn through daily patient treatment.

More importantly, on-the-job evaluations and regular feedback from clinical instructors will help residents improve any areas where their skills are not yet up to par.

Operating a training program that meets the AGCME-I accreditation requirements demands significant resources, especially faculty. The biggest challenge for residency programs aiming for AGCME-I accreditation is the resident-to-senior faculty ratio of 1:6, and the resident-to-total faculty ratio of 1:1.

This requirement aimed to ensure that resident physicians received regular guidance, evaluation, and feedback on their patient treatment capabilities. Through tremendous effort and close collaboration with the Vinmec Healthcare System, Military Hospital 108, National Children's Hospital, and VinUni, this challenging requirement was successfully met.

In addition, the program requires instructors to be equipped with clinical teaching skills at the bedside, assessment skills, and skills in providing feedback to trainees. Instructors in VinUni's residency program participate in training courses directly developed by UPenn's clinical education experts.

James A. Arrighi (Chairman - CEO of ACGME-I) stated: “ACGME-I accreditation demands a strong commitment to academic excellence and, in particular, a determination to pursue continuous improvement.”

VinUni's ability to achieve this prestigious accreditation in such a short time demonstrates the capabilities, vision, and determination of its team. When I visited Vietnam in April 2023, I was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of the team. VinUni is a pioneer in this field, and I believe they should widely share their experience with colleagues in Vietnam and the region.”

Professor David Bangsberg, President and Director of the VinUni Institute of Health Sciences, expressed: “Achieving accreditation after only 3 years of operation demonstrates our tremendous efforts. We are extremely grateful for the cooperation of Vietnam's network of teaching hospitals and especially appreciate the support of our strategic academic partner at the University of Pennsylvania – one of the world's leading medical schools.”

The greatest significance of this achievement lies in the quality of service provided to patients who have placed their trust in our professional care. The ultimate goal of achieving accreditation is to improve the quality of medical examination, treatment, and healthcare for patients.”

Previously, in July 2023, VinUni was officially recognized by ACGME-I as an internationally accredited training institution. With this achievement, VinUni is the first medical training institution in Vietnam and the second in Southeast Asia (after DUKE-NUS of the National University of Singapore) to achieve this result.

In March 2024, officially announced on its website, ACGME-I granted accreditation to 12 postgraduate medical training programs globally, including 3 residency programs at the Institute of Health Sciences - VinUni University.

According to ACGME-I, graduates from ACGME-I-accredited training programs will have the opportunity to be admitted to advanced specialist training programs in countries with similar systems.

The fact that the Institute of Health Sciences at VinUni University continues to achieve ACGME-I accreditation for three of its residency programs marks a significant milestone not only for VinUni but also for medical education in Vietnam.

Regarding the VinUni residency program

VinUni University currently has three departments co-designed and quality-validated by the University of Pennsylvania: Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics, and a new department, Orthopedics, which opened in 2023.

In addition to learning from experts at the University of Pennsylvania, resident physicians will have the opportunity to be mentored and guided by leading professors and doctors at Vinmec - a JCI-certified teaching hospital, and several leading public hospitals such as the National Children's Hospital, the Central Military Hospital 108, etc.

During their studies, VinUni resident doctors also have the opportunity to participate in advanced specialized courses, present research papers, and exchange ideas at VinUni's world-class partner institutions in Austria, the USA, and other countries.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, all doctors admitted to the residency program at VinUni will receive scholarships from VinUni and Vinmec, as well as a monthly allowance. All graduates will be guaranteed employment within the Vinmec Healthcare System with competitive salaries.
