Japanese police have arrested four Vietnamese men accused of carrying out a series of robberies at Uniqlo stores, causing an estimated $135,000 in damage.

Four Vietnamese nationals, two men and two women, are accused of committing 67 robberies at Uniqlo stores and other clothing stores in Tokyo and seven prefectures, including Osaka and Fukuoka, Fukuoka prefectural police announced on February 6. The estimated damage was about 20 million yen ($135,000).

Among the four was Nguyen Hoang Anh, 38 years old. The group is said to have stolen 5,237 items including long-sleeved shirts and jackets during multiple entries into Japan from December 2018 to October 2023. The seized items showed that in addition to clothes, there were many cosmetic items.

According to Japanese police, four Vietnamese people admitted to the charges, claiming to be in financial trouble. According to the investigation, the suspects targeted Uniqlo because it has many self-checkout stores in Japan. The stolen items were sold on online marketplaces in Vietnam.

Fukuoka police also issued an arrest warrant for a 40-year-old woman living in Vietnam, accusing her of instructing the four suspects to carry out a series of robberies.
