8/11 groups of goods and services have price index increase

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for April, just announced by the General Statistics Office on April 29, showed that the CPI for April 2024 increased by 0.07% over the previous month. Compared to December 2023, the CPI for April 2024 increased by 1.19% and compared to the same period last year, it increased by 4.4%. On average, in the first 4 months of 2024, the CPI increased by 3.93% over the same period last year; core inflation increased by 2.81%.

In the 0.07% increase in the Consumer Price Index in April 2024 compared to the previous month, there were 8 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes and 3 groups of goods with decreased price indexes.

According to the General Statistics Office, in the 0.07% increase in CPI in April 2024 compared to the previous month, there were 8 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes and 3 groups of goods with decreased price indexes.

The 8 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes are listed as follows: The transportation group had the highest increase of 1.95%, mainly due to the domestic gasoline price increasing by 4.78%; diesel price increased by 2.01% due to the impact of price adjustments during the month. Driver's license fees increased by 0.26%; vehicle maintenance service prices increased by 0.47%; vehicle parking services increased by 1.09% due to high demand...

The group of medicines and medical services increased by 0.92% due to the changing weather, disease-causing viruses multiplying, the number of pneumonia, chickenpox, and hand, foot and mouth disease cases increasing rapidly, so people have a need to buy medicines to strengthen the immune system.

The other goods and services group increased by 0.27% mainly due to the increase in prices of personal items, up 0.6%. Of which, jewelry prices increased by 5.4% following domestic gold prices; watch and jewelry repair services increased by 0.42%; personal services increased by 0.52%; and funeral services increased by 0.12%.

The housing and construction materials group increased by 0.21% due to the reasons of the 0.27% increase in household electricity prices due to increased electricity demand due to the severe hot weather in the southern localities; the price of kerosene increased by 1.35% due to the impact of price adjustments in the month...

The garment, hat and footwear group increased by 0.12% due to increased demand for some types of products for the summer. Of which, the price of footwear services increased by 0.38%; hats increased by 0.17%; fabrics of all kinds increased by 0.16%; ready-made clothes increased by 0.13%; footwear increased by 0.12%.

Core inflation in April 2024 increased by 0.17% over the previous month and increased by 2.79% over the same period last year.

The group of household appliances and equipment increased by 0.11%, of which prices of some items increased such as: Vacuum cleaners increased by 0.92% compared to the previous month; egg beaters and multi-purpose mixers increased by 0.71%; air conditioners increased by 0.48%; refrigerators increased by 0.34%; household appliance repair services increased by 0.41%.

The beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.09% due to the hot weather, so the demand for soft drinks increased, in which the price of mineral water increased by 0.25%; fruit juice increased by 0.12%; bottled and canned energy drinks increased by 0.07%.

The culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 0.03%, of which: Prices of package tours and guesthouses and hotels increased by 0.49% due to increased domestic tourism demand; flowers and ornamental plants decreased by 1.26% due to favorable weather, the flower season is in full swing so the price of fresh flowers has decreased sharply.

Three groups of goods and services had a decrease in price index, including: Food and catering services decreased by 0.13%, of which: Food decreased by 0.63%; foodstuff decreased by 0.18%; eating out increased by 0.21%.

The post and telecommunications group decreased by 0.17% mainly due to businesses implementing promotional programs to reduce prices for some old model mobile phones.

The education group decreased by 2.93% compared to the previous month, contributing to a decrease in the overall CPI by 0.18 percentage points, of which education services decreased by 3.32%. The main reason is that on December 31, 2023, the Government issued Decree No. 97/2023/ND-CP amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 81/2021/ND-CP dated August 27, 2021 of the Government, which requires localities to maintain stable tuition fees from the 2023-2024 school year at the same level as the tuition fees of the 2021-2022 school year for public preschool and general education, accordingly, a number of schools have adjusted their tuition fees down after collecting them according to Decree No. 81/2021/ND-CP.

According to the General Statistics Office, core inflation in April 2024 increased by 0.17% compared to the previous month and by 2.79% compared to the same period last year. On average, core inflation in the first four months of 2024 increased by 2.81% compared to the same period last year, lower than the average CPI (up 3.93%), mainly due to the prices of food, gasoline and medical services, which are factors affecting the increase in CPI but are excluded from the list of goods for calculating core inflation.
