The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Côte d'Ivoire (the host country of World Environment Day) have chosen the theme for World Environment Day 2023 as "Solutions to Plastic Pollution" and the slogan "Beat Plastic Pollution".
Over the 50 years since its establishment, World Environment Day has evolved into one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach.
Tens of millions of people participate in activities, events, and direct actions around the world. In addition, World Oceans Day (June 8th annually), adopted by the United Nations, demonstrates the connection of people worldwide towards the goal of conserving and sustainably developing the oceans.
Let's work together to green the AB InBev supply chain.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment , approximately 1.8 million tons of plastic waste are released into the environment in Vietnam each year, with 0.28 million to 0.73 million tons of that ending up in the sea - but only 27% of it is recycled or reused by facilities and businesses.
It is noteworthy that the handling and recycling of plastic waste still face many limitations, with up to 90% of plastic waste being disposed of through burial, landfilling, or incineration, and only 10% being recycled. Recognizing this, AB InBev, a leading global beer producer, prioritizes improving its processes and solutions for reducing, sorting at source, and enhancing the reuse and recycling of plastic waste components in its production.
In early June, the Anheuser-Busch Brewery Limited was filled with laughter as it celebrated World Environment Day and World Ocean Day with various activities.
Under the theme "Solutions for Plastic Pollution," over 200 employees from AB InBev's supply chain participated in key activities such as: signing a handprint commitment to reduce the use of single-use plastics, collecting, sorting, and recycling plastic waste within the factory premises, planting trees within the factory grounds to ensure a green environment from within, and a workshop on "Solutions for Plastic Pollution in Production" to raise awareness about reducing single-use plastics, with the goal of moving towards a green supply chain.
AB InBev's commitment to protecting the blue ocean.
In 2023, the theme for World Ocean Day, launched by the United Nations, was “The Ocean Planet: Changing Tides”. At AB InBev, with products made from simple materials, we understand the true value of precious resources, especially the marine environment.
AB InBev leverages nature-based solutions to develop resilience where it is most needed. The company is committed to partnering with communities, WWF, and The Nature Conservancy to build resilience and improve access to clean and safe water, including in marine environments.
With AB InBev's commitment to protecting the blue ocean, Corona is the first international beer brand to go plastic-free, and consistently leads with impactful initiatives and sustainable innovations in its global operations.
In Germany, Corona used recycled plastic containers for reusable beer bottles. With Corona's signature blue and white color scheme, this innovation won several packaging awards, including the PAC Global Award.
In addition, in Mexico, Corona connected with fishermen who were unable to go out to sea due to overfishing, and together they carried out ocean cleanup activities, collecting plastic waste. These activities not only supported the livelihoods of the fishermen but also contributed to solving the problem of ocean plastic pollution. This initiative was awarded the Cannes Lions Global Gold Award in the SDG category.
At AB InBev, we understand that, whether as a business or as individuals, everything we do contributes to healing and restoring the natural environment. This goes beyond simply recycling, reducing plastic waste, collecting marine debris, or other environmentally conscious activities.
Above all, we recognize our responsibility and commitment to action to protect nature, to restore greenery to the Amazon rainforest, to ensure that rivers continue their flow in a country with abundant rivers like Vietnam, and to allow future generations to live in harmony with nature and experience greater joy.
