The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Côte d'Ivoire (the host country of World Environment Day) have chosen the theme for World Environment Day 2023 as SOLUTIONS TO PLASTIC POLLUTION and the slogan "Beat Plastic Pollution".
In the 50 years since World Environment Day was established, it has grown into one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach. Tens of millions of people participate in activities, events and direct action around the world. In addition, World Oceans Day (June 8 every year) adopted by the United Nations represents a connection between people around the world with the goal of conserving and sustainably developing the ocean.
Greening the supply chain togetherAB InBev
According to statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, each year in Vietnam, about 1.8 million tons of plastic waste are discharged into the environment, of which 0.28 million to 0.73 million tons are discharged into the sea - but only 27% of it is recycled and utilized by facilities and businesses. It is worth mentioning that the treatment and recycling of plastic waste is still limited when up to 90% of plastic waste is treated by burying, filling, and burning, and only the remaining 10% is recycled. Realizing that, at AB InBev, the world's leading beer producer, we always prioritize improving the roadmap and solutions in minimizing, classifying at source, increasing the ability to reuse and recycle plastic waste components in production.
In early June, Anheuser-Busch Brewery was filled with laughter with many activities in response to World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. With the theme "Solutions to plastic pollution", more than 200 employees of AB InBev's supply chain participated in typical activities such as: Handprinting commitment to reduce single-use plastic, collecting, sorting and recycling plastic waste in the factory premises, planting trees in the factory premises to ensure green from the inside and the workshop "Solutions to plastic pollution in production" to raise awareness of reducing single-use plastic, with the goal of moving towards a green supply chain journey.
AB InBev's commitment to protecting the blue ocean
In 2023, the theme of World Oceans Day was launched by the United Nations “Planet Ocean: The Tide is Changing”. At AB InBev, with products made from simple ingredients, we understand the true value of precious resources, especially the marine environment. AB InBev leverages nature-based solutions to develop resilience where it is needed most. The company has committed to working with communities, WWF and The Nature Conservancy, to build resilience and improve access to clean and safe water, including the marine environment. AB InBev’s commitment to protecting the blue ocean made Corona the first international beer brand to go plastic-free, and continues to lead with impactful initiatives and sustainable innovations across its global operations. In Germany, Corona has adopted recycled plastic crates for its reusable beer bottles. With its signature Corona blue and white colour scheme, the invention has won several packaging awards, most notably the PAC Global Award.
In Mexico, Corona has also connected with fishermen who have not gone out to sea after overfishing to clean up the ocean and collect plastic waste. This activity, which won a Cannes Lions Global Gold Award in the SDG category, not only supports the livelihoods of fishermen but also helps address the problem of ocean plastic pollution.
At AB InBev, we understand that, whether as a business or as an individual, everything we do contributes to healing and restoring the greenness of nature. It does not stop at recycling, reducing plastic waste, collecting waste at sea or other environmental activities. Above all, we identify our responsibility and commit to taking action to protect nature, to bring green back to the Amazon forests, to let rivers continue their flow in a country with many rivers like Vietnam, so that our future generations will be able to live green with real nature with more joy.
