According to Bloomberg , Apple is “actively considering” overhauling its Safari browser on devices to focus on AI-powered search engines, a seismic shift that would potentially end its longstanding partnership with Google.
Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, also revealed this information during a hearing on May 7 in the US Department of Justice's lawsuit against Alphabet Inc. The focus of the dispute is an estimated $20 billion /year deal between the two companies, in which Google will become the default choice for queries on Apple's browser.
Beyond that disruption, AI has been gaining consumer attention. Cue noted that Safari searches fell for the first time in April, which he attributed to users turning to AI.
Apple's senior vice president of services even believes that AI search providers, including OpenAI, Perplexity AI, and Anthropic, will replace standard search engines like Google.
Apple currently offers OpenAI's ChatGPT as an option in its Siri virtual assistant and is expected to add Gemini, Google's AI search product, later this year. In addition, Cue added that the company has also considered Anthropic, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Grok from Elon Musk's xAI for this purpose.
Google and traditional search engines have been losing ground in the search market. Fifty-five percent of respondents to a survey conducted by The Information late last year said they were using chatbots instead of traditional search engines for everyday queries.
