According to Bloomberg , Apple is "actively considering" overhauling the Safari browser on its devices to focus on AI-powered search engines, a seismic shift that could end its long-standing partnership with Google.
Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, also revealed this information during a hearing on May 7th in the U.S. Justice Department 's lawsuit against Alphabet Inc. The core of the dispute is an estimated $20 billion -a-year agreement between the two companies, under which Google would become the default choice for queries on Apple's browser.
Beyond that disruption, AI has been gaining consumer attention. Cue noted that Safari search volume declined for the first time in April, which he attributed to users shifting to AI.
Even Apple's senior vice president of services believes that AI search providers, including OpenAI, Perplexity AI, and Anthropic, will replace standard search engines like Google.
Apple currently offers OpenAI's ChatGPT as an option in its Siri virtual assistant and is expected to add Gemini, Google's AI search product, later this year. Additionally, Cue added that Apple has also considered Anthropic, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Grok from Elon Musk's xAI for this purpose.
Google and traditional search engines have been losing market share in information retrieval. 55% of respondents in The Information 's survey conducted late last year said they were using chatbots instead of traditional search engines for their daily queries.
