In just two days, the 2024 high school graduation exam will officially begin. Similar to 2023, Literature is the first of nine subjects, and also the only one, to be in essay format. Before the exam, many candidates have been predicting what topics will be covered in the 2024 Literature graduation exam.
Accordingly, many works and genres were mentioned as predictions. Specifically, one account stated: "This year it will definitely be poetry." Meanwhile, another prediction was made using a recently posted image of singer Den Vau. Based on the image and the title of the song by this male singer, this person suggested that the 2024 Literature graduation exam would focus on the poems "Dong Chi" and "Chiec Thuyen Ngoai Xa."
However, one work that was mentioned most frequently by candidates was "The Country." According to a poll on social media, many candidates hoped and predicted that the 2024 high school graduation exam in Literature would include "The Country" (with the highest percentage of votes at 41%). Many other predictions also focused on "The Country."
One member boldly stated: "I predict the 2024 Literature graduation exam will definitely be based on one of the following works:
* Poetry genre
- Tay Tien (Quang Dung)
- Viet Bac (by To Huu)
- Waves (by Xuan Quynh)
- The Country (Nguyen Khoa Diem).
* Prose genre
- A Phu's Wife (To Hoai)
- The Picked-Up Wife (Kim Lân)
- The Boat in the Distance (Nguyen Minh Chau)
Who named the river? (Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong)
- The Ferryman of the Da River (Nguyen Tuan).
Therefore, candidates should study these three lessons thoroughly, even through the night:
- The Country (Nguyen Khoa Diem)
- The Ferryman of the Da River (Nguyen Tuan).
- The story of A Phu and his wife (by To Hoai).
Another account predicted 10 social commentary topics that might appear in this year's high school graduation exam in Literature as follows:
1. Autonomy in human life.
2. A positive attitude towards life's difficulties.
3. The importance of setting goals for people in life.
4. The meaning of empathy/sharing in life.
5. The importance of knowing how to create opportunities for oneself in life for each individual.
6. Happiness: Is it about bringing joy to others? Or is it simply about one's own satisfaction?
7. The role of one's homeland in each person's life.
8. Think about what you need to do to make your youth meaningful.
9. The necessity of experiencing life to grow and mature.
10. The significance of human striving in life.
Beyond just making predictions online, before the high school graduation exam, some students and parents also turned to spiritual activities hoping to receive messages of good luck and fortune. One student said that from the beginning of the month, they went on YouTube to watch tarot readers do tarot readings on the topic of exams to "choose a pile" and then watch the analysis to gain motivation for the exam.
Besides reading tarot cards, some students also save music clips on TikTok or images believed to be lucky, hoping for good fortune to come their way. Some even traveled nearly 60km with their mothers to a fortune teller's house to ask for predictions about their exam results.
Should we follow predictions for the 2024 Literature high school graduation exam?
Sharing his thoughts on students predicting the 2024 Literature graduation exam questions, Mr. Phan The Hoai, a teacher at Binh Hung Hoa High School in Ho Chi Minh City, explained: "Students often predict the 2024 Literature graduation exam questions for several reasons, such as entertainment and stress relief before the exam. If they guess correctly, they can brag to their friends for fun, blindly following social media trends; some even rely on guesswork based on belief..."
However, focusing only on certain topics and cramming will have negative consequences for students because they will be unable to complete the assignments; they will only be able to complete a portion; and they will lose the opportunity to be admitted to universities with majors that include Literature as a subject combination. Furthermore, the blatant display of cramming on social media will encourage more people to do the same."
Therefore, Mr. Hoai advised that before the exam, students need to rest, relax, and play sports ... Studying has been very stressful all year, so trying to cram during this time will not be very effective.
Ms. Le Tran Dieu Thu, a Literature teacher in Hanoi, also expressed that she was not too surprised, as anxiety before an important exam is unavoidable for parents and students.
"Perhaps due to a lack of confidence, anxiety, and a desire for their children to achieve good results, parents and students resort to guessing the exam questions or having superstitious thoughts about fortune telling," Ms. Thu observed.
However, according to Ms. Thu, fortune telling and believing in it has a significant impact on the psychology of those seeking it. Not to mention the waste of money, effort, mental energy, and time on useless things that cause anxiety, mental instability, and even more confusion and fear. This is extremely detrimental during this crucial period.
Conversely, for parents and students who receive very favorable "predictions" about the results, a sense of complacency will develop. They may even blindly trust the fortune-telling and neglect their studies, leading to unsatisfactory results.
"While it's true that 'there's power in belief, and there's benefit in caution,' parents and students shouldn't overuse it or treat it as a shield before graduating and entering university. At this final stage, instead of wasting money and time on fortune telling and superstitions, students should focus on studying, maintaining their health, keeping their spirits high, and ensuring consistent performance."
Parents also need to encourage their children to have a successful exam, while guiding them towards what is right and just, and teaching them to distinguish between good and bad beliefs. Without a serious study and exam preparation plan, no prophecy or superstition can bring good results," Ms. Thu stated.
