Amazon is exploring the possibility of deploying satellite internet in Vietnam.

Amazon is exploring the deployment of low-orbit satellite internet and also wants Vietnam to become a manufacturing hub for certain devices intended for export.

This information was released during a meeting between Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan and Mr. David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President, Global Head of Legal and External Affairs at Amazon, on the afternoon of May 22nd.

This move comes after Amazon has repeatedly expressed interest in the Vietnamese satellite internet market. During a meeting with leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2025, representatives of the corporation indicated their intention to explore opportunities to provide satellite internet services in Vietnam through a pilot license.

Amazon's satellite internet project, initially called Kuiper, was renamed Amazon Leo in late 2025. The system is built on a low-orbit satellite constellation model, with plans to deploy over 3,200 satellites to provide high-speed internet connectivity to remote areas and islands.

According to Amazon's description, this service can achieve speeds of 400 Mbps for individual users and 1 Gbps for businesses, with low latency. As of April this year, Amazon Leo had launched more than 300 satellites into orbit through 11 launches, but it has not yet been commercially launched. It is currently the world's third largest satellite internet system, after Starlink and OneWeb. In Vietnam, Amazon has established a business called Amazon Kuiper in Ho Chi Minh City.

During the meeting, Minister Vu Hai Quan highly appreciated Amazon's contributions to supporting e-commerce exports, cloud computing, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as promoting innovation and digital transformation in Vietnam.

The head of the Ministry of Science and Technology requested Amazon to expand investment in digital infrastructure, data, and high technology in Vietnam; strengthen cooperation with domestic technology businesses; promote technology transfer and develop high-quality human resources. Minister Vu Hai Quan also requested the corporation to work alongside Vietnam in building a green and sustainable technology ecosystem.

He affirmed that the Ministry of Science and Technology is ready to coordinate with relevant units to support and facilitate Amazon in the process of research, investment, business, production, and testing of equipment in accordance with legal regulations.
