Why is coach Park Hang Seo making a comeback to lead a Thai club?

It wasn't easy for Park Hang Seo to make the decision to return to football coaching, especially at a less prestigious club in Thailand.

On his personal YouTube channel on June 2nd, Lee Dong Jun (manager and representative of coach Park Hang Seo) explained in detail the strategist's choice of Kanchanaburi FC, a lower-division team in Thailand, as his return to coaching.

First, Mr. Lee presented the reasons why Mr. Park Hang Seo rejected attractive job offers in the K-League, V-League, and Southeast Asian national teams.

" The first reason , besides his promise not to coach clubs in South Korea and Vietnam (at his last press conference in 2023), is that Mr. Park considers his duty - as a pioneer - to create an environment and foundation for younger generations of coaches to develop."

Secondly , Park's contract value was already set at the highest level in the region, so he wouldn't accept an offer if the price wasn't commensurate.

Thirdly , once the financial aspect was approved, Mr. Park requested a "comprehensive coaching staff package" (including a fitness coach, analyst, goalkeeping coach, Korean and local assistants...) along with good compensation for them. Very few football federations or clubs could fully meet this requirement," Lee Dong Jun shared.

Many fans are wondering why, upon his return to coaching, Park Hang Seo chose the club level instead of the national team.

"In terms of achievements, coach Park has reached the pinnacle at the national team level. It's very difficult to find a project that can surpass what he has accomplished with the Vietnamese national team."

However, it's different at the club level. In the past, Park has twice led smaller teams to championships and promotions in K-League 2. He's considered an expert at coaching weaker teams, and this is the motivation for his new project," Lee Dong Jun explained.

Regarding the reason why Park Hang Seo chose Thailand over any other country in Southeast Asia, Lee said: "Thai clubs tend to favor Japanese coaches. It's extremely difficult for a purely Korean coach, who has achieved great success in Vietnam, to enter Thailand. Thailand always considers its league the best in the region and has a very high sense of pride. Therefore, this is a major challenge requiring courage from coach Park."

"Many people wonder why Mr. Park didn't choose a prestigious team like Buriram United but instead opted for a lower-division, less renowned team like Kanchanaburi. The answer lies in the opportunities and potential for development. Mr. Park highly values the vision of the Kanchanaburi management, especially their dedication to youth development. Furthermore, this club gives him full authority over professional decisions and maximum freedom in terms of coaching staff personnel," Lee Dong Jun shared.

"Coach Park Hang Seo hasn't turned his back on Vietnam or South Korea. He's harboring a broader vision. Just like how coach Guus Hiddink brought Park Ji Sung and Lee Young Pyo to Europe, Coach Park wants to create opportunities for Vietnamese and South Korean players to compete in the Thai league. From there, he aims to build an ASEAN network, connecting the football of all three countries," Lee said.

Park Hang Seo has taken over as head coach of Kanchanaburi FC on a two-year contract, with his salary undisclosed. His primary goal is to help the team regain promotion to Thai League 1 and qualify for international competitions in subsequent seasons.

Due to his commitments managing the South Korean national team at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Mexico, Park Hang Seo (currently the Vice President of the Korean Football Association) will not officially take on the role until the end of July. Until then, his assistant, Lee Jung Soo, will temporarily manage the team in his place.

With Bac Ninh Club, Mr. Park still has a contract remaining as a senior advisor.
