According to CNN , the Chenab arch bridge, completed after decades of construction, stands 359 meters above the river of the same name, 29 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower, and is the world's highest railway bridge.
Costing over $160 million to build and measuring 1,315 meters in length, this bridge is part of a railway line connecting Kashmir with the rest of India. The bridge's inauguration was attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In addition to the Chenab Bridge, Modi also attended the inauguration of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project, which will connect key cities in Kashmir with the rest of the country.
For Modi, investments in infrastructure such as the Chenab Bridge and this large-scale railway project are seen as powerful tools for promoting social integration.
Modi's government has poured billions of dollars into upgrading India's aging and outdated transport network as part of its vision to transform the country into a developed nation by 2047.
Among these ambitious projects is the construction of a series of road tunnels and highways in the Himalayan mountains, which has drawn criticism from some environmentalists. They argue that large-scale construction could damage the already fragile landscape, which is already suffering from the effects of the climate crisis.
