According to Bloomberg , Apple has further strengthened its AI capabilities by completing the acquisition of DarwinAI. The source also stated that the entire startup staff has joined Apple's AI division, including the AI researcher from the University of Waterloo (Canada) and DarwinAI co-founder, Alexander Wong.
DarwinAI is an AI startup founded in 2017, developing AI technology for visual inspection of components during the printed circuit board manufacturing process.
With the acquisition of DarwinAI, Apple is almost certain to integrate AI features into its upcoming devices.
The deal also provides Apple with additional manpower to develop new features for iOS 18. According to Bloomberg , iOS 18 will integrate several AI-generated features. It is expected to be one of the biggest iOS updates Apple has ever released.
Earlier in January 2024, a memo from investment bank Morgan Stanley indicated that Apple's Edge AI would become a reality in 2024, and that artificial intelligence (AI) would likely be integrated into the iPhone 16 generation.
Edge AI refers to edge artificial intelligence algorithms, meaning tasks are processed locally on the hardware device without requiring any connection, using data generated from the device and providing real-time insights.
Apple is reportedly focusing on two products: the Siri 2.0 virtual assistant, which runs on a large language model, and the iPhone 16, which will feature generative AI.
According to analysts, AI could also be integrated into many Apple applications, such as automatically creating playlists in Apple Music, writing reports or creating presentations in Pages and Keynote, in addition to Siri and the messaging app.
The iPhone 16 series is expected to launch in September. Of particular note are the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, featuring significant camera upgrades, support for Wi-Fi 7 and 5G Advance connectivity, and a graphene-based cooling system.
The iPhone 16 series may feature AI generative capabilities, allowing users to interact with chatbots or create images using text directly on their phones.
