Apple to launch low-cost version of Vision Pro

According to SlashGear , while the next-generation Vision Pro is said to be faster with an advanced sensor array, the cheaper model promises to help push Apple's virtual reality headset into the mainstream. In a Power On report recently published by Bloomberg tech market commentator Mark Gurman, the low-cost version of the Vision Pro is in testing and could launch in 2025. The headset could be called the Vision or Vision One, and it could cost much less than the $3,500 Vision Pro, which would mean the device would be stripped of many features.

Vision Pro is not cheap

The question is why Apple would want to make Vision cheaper. It probably stems from the fact that Vision Pro can’t be a mainstream consumer device at $3,500, and if Apple really wants to win the “space computing race,” it needs to make the hardware more accessible. That’s where cheaper glasses fit in.

When it comes to the Vision Pro, the device is packed with arguably the most advanced mixed reality (XR) technology available, but its three biggest selling points are its pixel-dense micro-OLED display, dual-processor design, and multiple sensors for visualizing the environment and controlling gestures. Gurman predicts that Apple could ditch the R1 + M2 chip design on the Vision Pro, instead opting for a single M-series silicon on the lower-cost Vision model, or even an A-series chip from the iPhone.

Users have to wait about 2 more years for the cheap Vision version.

Next, Apple could downsize the display hardware. The Vision Pro features a custom micro-OLED display system with 23 million pixels that Apple claims can deliver 4K resolution to each eye. Apple could downgrade that to a more mainstream LCD unit for a more affordable model. By comparison, Meta’s high-end Quest Pro glasses feature two LCD displays, each with a resolution of 1,800 x 1,920 pixels per eye.

Ultimately, Apple could also cut back on the number of sensors on the Vision Pro to keep costs down, but key features like gesture tracking and EyeSight could still make their way to the cheaper model. It’s unclear how much Apple will charge for the cheaper headset, but the company could sell it for $1,000 like the Quest Pro.
