Many believe that Apple will split the Vision product line into two variants: a Pro model and a cheaper standard model. Apple is said to have de-prioritized the virtual reality headset models and gradually assigned fewer employees to the project.
The company has announced that it is discontinuing production of the next generation of the Vision Pro, but it is still working on a more affordable and feature-rich "Vision" product.
And recently, expert Mark Gurman said that Apple's virtual reality glasses team is actively developing new devices to compete with Meta. Among the products is the lower-priced Vision Pro model.
The cheaper version of Vision Pro uses cheaper materials, a weaker processor than the first generation, and may even have to cut down on the EyeSight feature. However, with a more accessible price, Apple hopes to sell the product twice as much as it does now.
The Vision Pro is Apple’s first foray into the virtual reality market, but it’s expensive, heavy, and susceptible to heat. The device costs up to $3,500, while Meta’s product is lighter and costs just under $1,000.
Gurman said Apple is trying to compete with Meta and needs to accelerate its innovation cycle to maintain its position.
