Meta has quietly launched Forum, a new application specifically for Facebook Groups, without any official announcement.
According to Matt Navarra's discovery from the Geekout Newsletter on the App Store, Forum is described as "a private space for the conversations that matter most to you." The app is built for Facebook Groups and can help users get "real answers" from "real people," leading to comparisons with Reddit, the online community discussion platform.
Users need a Facebook account to use the Forum. After logging in, their profile and activity will be synced to the new app. Therefore, the Forum is not a completely anonymous discussion platform like Reddit, although users can still use anonymous display names similar to those on the main Facebook app. However, group administrators can still see their real identities.
Unlike the Facebook news feed, which displays posts from friends, groups, followed pages, and algorithm-recommended content, Forum focuses on conversations within the groups the user participates in. Upon first login, the app also asks the user what content they would like to see, so Forum can suggest posts from other groups that match their interests.
User posts in forum groups will still appear on the main Facebook app and vice versa. This allows users to continue or start conversations from both apps.
This isn't the first time Meta has developed a separate app centered around groups. When it was still Facebook, the company launched a standalone Groups app, but discontinued it in 2017.
The forum also incorporates several artificial intelligence (AI) features. The "Ask" feature can aggregate responses from multiple groups to answer users' questions, saving them the need to search each group individually. Additionally, the application includes an AI assistant for administrators, supporting group management and administration.
When asked about Forum, Meta stated that the product is currently still in the testing phase.
