Full review of the HiSilicon Kirin 9000S

Despite being touted as a significant advancement, reviews from Nanoreview and Tomshardware indicate that while the Kirin 9000S offers many highlights, it also has some notable limitations.

Huawei faced the prospect of losing access to US-sourced technology, including TSMC's systems, forcing them to seek assistance from SMIC to manufacture the Kirin 9000S using the 7nm process.

Nanoreview conducted detailed tests on the Kirin 9000S and compared it to its predecessor, the Kirin 9000. In the AnTuTu 10 test, the Kirin 9000S achieved a nearly identical overall score to the Kirin 9000, but suffered a 33% drop in GPU performance.

On Geekbench 6, the Kirin 9000S showed remarkable multitasking performance, being faster than the Kirin 9000 despite having a lower clock speed and a similar number of cores. However, surprisingly, the Kirin 9000 outperformed the 3DMark Wild Life test by 20%, which may be related to the Kirin 9000's GPU capabilities.

The difference between SMIC's 7nm manufacturing process and TSMC's N5 process has resulted in a significant difference in energy efficiency. The Kirin 9000S, manufactured using SMIC's second-generation process, has significantly lower energy efficiency than the Kirin 9000.

Tomshardware concludes that the Kirin 9000S, while slower than its predecessor, is still a good chip for smartphones. However, the question remains whether it will be competitive enough in a highly competitive market with products from Apple, MediaTek, and Qualcomm. The truth behind Huawei's latest chip remains a topic of interest, posing challenges and prospects for the company's future in the mobile technology sector.
