How many minutes of exercise should you do each day?

Regular exercise habits depend on many factors, including the body parts being targeted, the type of exercise, and an individual's overall health status.

For healthy individuals, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to maintain good health. However, vigorous exercise for 25-30 minutes each day can also provide significant benefits.

So, should you exercise for 25, 30, or 60 minutes each day?

Dr. Anup Khatri, Senior Consultant Orthopedic Doctor at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai (India), answers: For most people, at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day is enough to stay fit and support cardiovascular health.

He explained: If the goal is weight loss or increased endurance, then the workout time can be extended to at least 60 minutes.

For busy people, even 25 minutes of focused, high-intensity activity can help relieve stress and calm down, according to the Indian Express.

The key is consistency.

Dr. Khatri advises: Maintain a daily exercise routine, including walking, cycling, yoga, or strength training. Combine cardiovascular exercise with strength training throughout the week for a balanced fitness level. Furthermore, listen to your body.

Cardiovascular exercises include brisk walking, jogging, swimming, or dancing; while strength training includes weightlifting or bodyweight exercises such as squats and push-ups.

Dr. Surender Pal Singh, Head of Physiotherapy at Birla Hospital, Delhi (India), said: "Dividing exercises into different forms, such as cardiovascular and strength training, can enhance results. A 60-minute session combining these forms can help burn more calories and improve overall fitness. Doing it twice a week is usually enough to maintain overall health."

Whether you're exercising at a moderate or high intensity, 25-30 minutes per session is usually sufficient.

Dr. Pal added: However, those with underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disorders or diabetes need to adjust accordingly. Exercises should be broken down into shorter intervals, and a doctor should be consulted before starting any new exercise regimen.

Dr. Pal stated: "Nowadays, experts recommend training different muscle groups on different days because this has been scientifically proven to yield better results. It's better to do cardiovascular training one day, strength training another, and alternate that with a day of rest or recovery. Rest days are essential for the body to recover and prevent injury."

25-30 minutes of exercise per session is usually sufficient.

Finally, Dr. Pal concluded: Whether moderate or high-intensity exercise, 25-30 minutes per session is usually sufficient, according to the Indian Express.

However, combining cardiovascular and strength training into a single session lasting 60 minutes can yield significant benefits. Variety, consistency, and proper recovery are key to effective and sustainable fitness.

Dr. Khatri advises: It's important to remember that even short periods of exercise are better than no exercise at all. Make sure you maintain activity throughout the day. Try stretching while working, and frequently stand up for breaks and walk around. Focus on a healthy lifestyle. Consult with a fitness professional to determine which routines work best for you.
