As the last cold winds of winter subside, giving way to the dry, sunny days, in many rural areas of Ha Tinh province , flower farmers enter the busiest time of the year. On lands once familiar only with rice, crops, or even acacia forests, now are gardens of chrysanthemums and peach blossoms, stirring to buds, waiting for the day they will all bloom together.

In Tan Tay Huong village (Tung Loc commune), the garden of Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai's family, situated on the fertile land along the Nghen River, stands out with the vibrant green of chrysanthemum fields about to bloom. This is the fourth season that Ms. Lai's family has switched from growing less productive vegetables to cultivating flowers for the Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival. Starting from visits to relatives in Lam Dong in 2020, Ms. Lai and her husband conceived the idea of changing their production model to increase their income.

Ms. Lai recounted: “At that time, our family's garden was over 2,000 square meters , mostly overgrown with weeds, with the rest planted with sweet potatoes and seasonal vegetables, yielding very little income. Thanks to the knowledge we gained from flower cultivation models in Lam Dong, my husband and I discussed trying to grow flowers for Tet (Lunar New Year). After the first harvest proved suitable, we decided to borrow capital to invest in a greenhouse, irrigation system, etc., and proceeded to cultivate on an area of 500 square meters . Subsequent harvests were all successful, and now we have expanded to 1,500 square meters .”
This flower season, Ms. Lai's family planted 75,000 chrysanthemum plants and some other flower varieties. If all goes well, they expect to earn around 200 million VND in revenue, with a profit of over 100 million VND after deducting expenses. According to Ms. Lai, thanks to the application of a closed-loop care process, an automatic irrigation system, and growth regulation techniques to ensure the flowers bloom in time for Tet (Lunar New Year), each flower crop brings in significantly higher income than growing rice previously. Importantly, the products are not only sold within the commune but are also purchased by traders from neighboring areas. In Ms. Lai's family's mindset, growing flowers is no longer just a means of livelihood, but a new, proactive, calculated, and market-oriented approach to agriculture .
Not only in Tung Loc, but in many localities throughout the province such as Toan Luu commune, Duc Tho, Nghi Xuan, Hong Loc, Thanh Sen ward, etc., growing flowers for the Lunar New Year has helped many farmers change their lives and become well-off. Among them, Toan Luu is a locality famous for decades for its tradition of growing flowers and ornamental plants for Tet.

At this time, in Kim Son village (Toan Luu commune), a major peach blossom growing area for Tet (Lunar New Year), families are busy stripping leaves and fertilizing to stimulate bud formation so that the peach blossoms bloom in time for the Lunar New Year. Mr. Tran Van Tuan shared: “With only a little over a month left until the Lunar New Year, the key to ensuring the peach blossoms bloom at the right time is the leaf stripping and bud stimulation stage. From now until Tet, the weather forecast predicts several more cold spells, so we are doing the leaf stripping earlier than usual. Besides proper cultivation techniques, success in peach blossom farming also depends on self-learning and accumulating experience.”

Mr. Tuan further shared that this year, his family has 200 peach trees that will be sold during the Lunar New Year of the Horse. If the weather is favorable and the trees bloom as expected, they expect to earn around 200-300 million VND. Watching him meticulously observe each bud, carefully stripping leaves, and pruning excess branches so that the tree can concentrate nutrients on the buds, we understood that growing peach trees is a job that requires a lot of effort and dedication. For peach growers, each Lunar New Year season carries with it so much hope for prosperity after months of diligent care.

Also in Toan Luu commune, the family of Ms. Dao Thi Phuong (Xuan Son village) is one of the pioneering households that transformed their mixed garden into chrysanthemum cultivation nearly 10 years ago. On an area of approximately 1,300 square meters , she proactively invested in greenhouses and applied scientific care methods to improve flower quality. Thanks to good control of humidity, light, and a care process tailored to each growth stage, her family's chrysanthemum garden always develops uniformly, minimizing risks from weather. Every day, Ms. Phuong regularly checks each flower bed, because for chrysanthemum growers, carefulness and perseverance are the key factors for success.
Ms. Phuong shared: "With the greenhouse covering the plants, the care is less strenuous, the flowers grow evenly and beautifully, and the market is therefore stable. For each chrysanthemum crop for Tet, after deducting expenses, the family earns about 70-90 million VND."

Mr. Tran Ba Hoanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Toan Luu commune, said: “Currently, the entire commune has about 3.5 hectares dedicated to producing various types of flowers for the Tet market, with the majority of flower cultivation concentrated in Xuan Son village. Peach blossoms are particularly popular in Kim Son village, with about 170 households participating. For many years, growing Tet flowers has brought considerable income to the local people. We always encourage and support people in changing their crop structure to improve efficiency per unit of production, thereby contributing to the development of the local economy.”
Along with the proactive efforts of the people, local authorities have strengthened technical support, guided cultivation processes, and connected product consumption, creating conditions for the stable development of flower and ornamental plant cultivation models. From previously low-income fields and land plots, Tet flowers and ornamental plants have gradually become high-value economic crops, contributing to changing the face of the rural economy in the province.
The blooming flowers that adorn the countryside and towns during the Lunar New Year and spring season not only beautify the villages and cities but also demonstrate the significant transformations in agricultural production. Using the same familiar fields and gardens, thanks to their intelligence, diligence, and desire for a better life, the farmers of Ha Tinh have created a prosperous future for themselves, weaving beautiful springs across their homeland.
