(CLO) While 83.3% of Vietnamese people use the internet to read news, 96.1% use social media. This figure speaks volumes about the fierce competition in the media industry.
Readers are increasingly migrating to digital platforms.
In fact, around the world , traditional journalists are being overtaken by young innovators like Dylan Page (10 million followers) and Vitus Spehar (3 million followers), who are providing a socially relevant approach to news content.
Young people say they like these platforms because they foster transparency and trust, are easy to use, and offer fresh perspectives.
According to Wearesocial's 2024 statistics, 83.3% of Vietnamese internet users use the internet to read news content, a decrease of 4.3% compared to 2023. However, as many as 96.1% of Vietnamese internet users use social media, and 84% use the internet to watch streaming content.
In terms of time, in 2024, Vietnamese people spent an average of 1 hour and 47 minutes per day reading online news, a decrease of 15 minutes compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the average time spent on social media channels was 2 hours and 25 minutes.
These figures vividly demonstrate that Vietnamese journalism is gradually being overshadowed by social media channels.

Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus online newspaper, cited a recent international conference where he was truly shocked by the strong warnings issued by media experts. For example, while we were previously only familiar with the phrase "print media is declining," now people are saying that all forms of traditional media, including print, radio, and television, are "dying."
"Therefore, it's no longer surprising that a podcaster or vlogger has more viewers/listeners than a mainstream news agency. This shows that many news organizations haven't 'caught on' with young people. Digital platforms have long ceased to prioritize news organizations, while many news publishers are hesitant or slow to change, leading to a failure to attract readers when they move away from their traditional markets," said Mr. Hoang Nhat.
Join forces with technology to go further together.
According to Nguyen Hoang Nhat, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus, in the past, whenever we considered a topic, we would think about how many words the article should have and whether it belonged to the genre of reportage, interview, or feature story. But in the digital age, readers receive information through many different forms.
"That's why we consider changing the way we tell stories and enhancing the reader's experience as our top priority. The information remains the same, but we need to make it engaging for them," Mr. Nhat said.
RapNewsPlus is one such innovative approach. And most of the journalistic works that helped VietnamPlus win top awards are multimedia products with fresh storytelling methods, such as the recent interactive 3D work celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi, which allows readers to immerse themselves in the historical story.

Since 2021, VietnamPlus online newspaper has also partnered with Insider to pilot the collection of user data for packaging news articles and delivering them directly to users via Newsletter and Web-Push. In November 2023, the newspaper allowed readers to log in via Google Account, enabling the editorial team to access user history and eventually connect and manage users through Google Reader Revenue Manager.
Emphasizing the importance of close and collaborative partnerships to go further together with technology and platform development partners, Mr. Cao Anh Minh - General Director of Ho Chi Minh City Television Station - said that in addition to cooperating with platforms to bring programs to a wider audience, cooperation in advertising technology also needs to be researched and developed.
Some examples of new advertising technologies include DBI (Dynamic Advertising), virtual reality advertising (where advertisements are inserted into programs in a realistic manner), and localized advertising (where users scan posters or programs with their phones). There are also localized advertising formats where different advertisements appear during live broadcasts of programs or events.
General Director Cao Anh Minh stated that AI technology is currently a trend and also the future in all aspects of social life. The unlimited creativity of AI, when combined with the rationality of managers and implementers, could help reduce costs and improve quality in program production and many other fields.
"For example, many creative photos and clips created with AI are appearing online these days. Some photos and clips are very popular with viewers. While a painter would need a lot of time to create such a picture, AI not only does it in a very short time but also produces many different versions," Mr. Minh said.
According to Mr. Cao Anh Minh, HTV has always wanted to contribute to promoting technological innovation. Recently, the first International Science, Technology and Innovation Festival was held at Saigon Riverfront Park.
This program is a collaboration between the People's Committee of Thu Duc City and HTV. With the theme of Science, Technology and Digital Transformation, it showcases highly applicable products for people to experience firsthand, placing the people at the center. The program also serves as a technology playground for large technology companies and corporations. Furthermore, it provides a space for students to showcase their creativity on stage and a startup competition for university students.
"The daily changes and developments in digital technology ; the viewing and purchasing behavior of different generations, especially young people; and the increasingly detailed and practical needs of brands – these are issues that news and television agencies need to closely follow and empathize with. To survive and thrive, journalism must go beyond mere news, not just producing news, but also creating new values," shared the General Director of HTV.
