This is one of the first cases of arrest for abusing artificial intelligence in China.
The man, surnamed Hong, “abused modern technological methods to create fake information and then spread it on social media,” the Public Security Bureau of Northern Gansu Province said in a press release posted on the WeChat app.
The crime was exposed after police discovered a fake news article about a train accident that killed nine people, posted by multiple accounts on Baidu Inc.'s Baijiahao Blog platform. The article was read 15,000 times before it was deleted.
Further investigation revealed that the man, surnamed Hong, used chatbot technology to alter the content of popular news articles before reposting them. Chatbots are technology that cannot be accessed from China normally but can be accessed through the use of VPN networks. The man told investigators that people he knew on WeChat had instructed him on how to make money through clicks.
Authorities said the popularity and large number of views of these articles would make the man surnamed Hong liable for a “felony” charge of “aggression and provoking trouble” – an offense that could see him serve at least five years in prison.
OpenAI's artificial intelligence technology has received a lot of attention in China, both from big tech companies wanting to design similar chatbots, and from authorities wanting to come up with regulations to control it.
