North Korea's borders have remained closed to foreign visitors for nearly five years due to restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Now, the country is preparing to reopen to tourism , starting with the city of Samjiyon.

According to information from China-based travel agency Koryo Tours: “We have received confirmation from our local partner that tourism activities to Samjiyon will officially resume in December this year.”

Samjiyon, located in the northeastern part of North Korea, is known as the “jewel” of the country. The city is located near Mount Paektu, a sacred mountain that Koreans worship as the origin of the nation. There is even a museum of the same name to introduce the history, culture and nature of Mount Paektu.

The special geographical location is also the reason why Samjiyon possesses poetic and majestic natural landscapes. Coming here, visitors can conquer the peak of Paektu Mountain, admire the beauty of Thien Tri Lake, a large freshwater lake located on the crater of an extinct volcano.

Surrounding Samjiyon are primeval forests with diverse ecosystems, ideal for trekking, camping... immersing yourself in the fresh air.

Mount Paektu is located on the border between North Korea and China, and is the highest peak on the peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

In recent years, Samjiyon has been invested in to become a modern city, with unique architectural works and a complete infrastructure system following the model of a "civilized mountain town" with apartments, hotels, ski resorts and many new commercial establishments.

But the interesting thing here is that despite many changes in modern life, people still try to preserve the traditional cultural values of the nation.

The people of Samjiyon are famous for their friendliness and willingness to help visitors. With a terrain that is mostly mountainous, they mainly practice agriculture , growing food crops, fruit trees and raising livestock. Many rituals and festivals related to agriculture were born here such as the plowing ceremony, the harvest festival, the Paektu Mountain festival...

Samjiyon cuisine also has the distinct characteristics of the highlands. Dishes often use natural, nutritious ingredients such as mushrooms, wild vegetables, wild game meat, etc. with simple preparation methods such as boiling, steaming or stir-frying, with a light taste, little oil, delicate and elegant.

Street names in Samjiyon are meant to evoke Korean history, such as Chongbong, Milyong, and Ri Myong-su, which represent revolutionary milestones.

Autumn is the ideal time to visit Samjiyon because the weather is cool and pleasant. Especially, you can watch the leaves turn yellow, creating a romantic scene. Winter is also extremely interesting with skiing, ice skating, etc. However, due to the specific regulations and culture of Korea, tours to Samjiyon are often organized in groups and you need to comply with many regulations.
