Samjiyon, with its uniquely designed buildings, is unlike anywhere else in North Korea.

For nearly five years, North Korea's borders remained closed to foreign visitors due to restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Now, the country is preparing to reopen for tourism , starting with the city of Samjiyon.

According to information from Koryo Tours, a travel company based in China: "We have received confirmation from our local partner that tourism to Samjiyon will officially resume in December this year."

Samjiyon, located in northeastern North Korea, is known as the "jewel" of the country. The city is situated near Mount Paektu, a sacred mountain revered by Koreans as the origin of their nation. There is even a museum named after Mount Paektu dedicated to its history, culture, and natural beauty.

Samjiyon's unique geographical location is also the reason it boasts such picturesque and majestic natural landscapes. Here, visitors can conquer the summit of Mount Paektu and admire the beauty of Lake Tianchi, a large freshwater lake located in the crater of an extinct volcano.

Samjiyon is surrounded by pristine forests with diverse ecosystems, ideal for trekking, camping, and immersing yourself in the fresh air.

Mount Paektu, located on the border between North Korea and China, has the highest peak on the peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

In recent years, Samjiyon has been developed into a modern city, with unique architectural structures and a complete infrastructure system modeled after a "civilized mountain town," featuring apartments, hotels, ski resorts, and many new commercial establishments.

What's interesting, however, is that despite the many changes in modern life, people still strive to preserve the traditional cultural values of their nation.

The people of Samjiyon are known for their friendliness and willingness to help visitors. With a predominantly mountainous terrain, their main occupation is agriculture , cultivating food crops and fruit trees, and raising livestock. Many agricultural rituals and festivals originated here, such as the plowing ceremony, the harvest festival, and the Paektu Mountain festival.

Jeogori (the basic upper part of a hanbok) is a type of traditional Korean clothing often worn on festive occasions.

Samjiyon's culinary culture also reflects the distinctive characteristics of the high mountain region. Dishes often use natural, nutritious ingredients such as mushrooms, wild vegetables, and wild game meat, prepared simply by boiling, steaming, or stir-frying, resulting in light, low-fat, refined, and elegant flavors.

Street names in Samjiyon are chosen to evoke Korean history, such as Chongbong, Milyong, and Ri Myong-su, representing revolutionary milestones.

Autumn is the ideal time to visit Samjiyon because of the cool, pleasant weather. In particular, you can admire the leaves turning yellow, creating a romantic scene. Winter is also very enjoyable with activities like skiing and ice skating… However, due to specific regulations and Korean culture, tours to Samjiyon are usually organized in groups, and you need to adhere to many rules.
